Can a shotgun be deactivated

Hello

I am new to the forum and have a question.

I have an old Belgian folding hammer action .410 that was my great grandfathers. It is a bit on an heir loom and am not keen to get rid of it, however I am worried it is not safe to shoot. I stopped using it years ago as the barrel is very badly pitted. Is it possible to have it deactivated, so I could put it up on the wall or something, or will it have to be destroyed?

Thanks

Yes it is any gunsmith can do it then send it to proof house for testing and certificating as deactivated. you can then hang it on the wall, I hate to see usable guns deactivated but a quick measure of the bores by a smith will tell youif it is out of proof

My old fella's got an ancient Army and Navy hammer gun. Its chuffing lethal!!! It goes off randomly if left cocked. He used to use it when he was the only person on the marsh and would only cock it when he was on the way up for a bird. Sometimes it would go off as soon as he'd cocked it, it was enough to give you a heart attack. Thankfully its not seen the light of day since the 80's.

Only price I've seen a cost for is 120 quid.

Cost breakdown: London proof house charge 30 quid to check it over (not sure about Birmingham costs). On top of that you need someone to do the work (to the specifications required) which will take a couple of hours, and sort out transport.

Remember that you don't need to have it deactivated just to keep it, even if it is out of proof. There is even a chance that you could mount it on the wall fully working if it was fitted securely enough to keep your FEO happy.
