lab slow at reacting to commands

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Hope you can help me with this latest problem,I have a 13 month old lab who has just started to react slowly to a sit command or a stop whistle command. He understands the command yet only reacts in his own time.Is this what experts refer to as sticky and what do i do next get him back on a lead ?

Thanks people

Lee

I'm no expert, but no it's not sticky... it's just him thinking twice before responding so you need to look at your training.

Why are you asking him to stop and in what situation, is it simply because you would like him to?

There has to be something for the dog to want to stop for.

To give you an example, sit the dog up and walk away. Throw a dummy over his head (assuming he is steady to thrown dummy?). Call him to you, away from the dummy. Blow the stop whistle. As soon as he stops send him away for the dummy - he'll sharpen up when he realises stop is for a reason and that reason will be his reward.

yep, agree with that. perhaps start taking him back to the exact spot you gave the command, lightly admonish giving the command again, if you still stuggle but i doubt you will

Thanks for the replies guys,I will make sure for the next month i wont ask him to sit unless its a part of his working in the field and only if there is a reward of a retrieve afterwards.

Lets hope that will do the trick.

Thanks again Lee

The main thing Lee is don't give him the retrieve if he doesn't stop sharp. Best to set it up in training before doing it on the real thing, or maybe I am misreading your post when you say "working in the field"?

how many times do you give the command before you react if he fails to do as asked?

ask once if he fails to react as required respond by going to him and showing what you want first time every time, dont ask twice or he will think he can do it when he wants and in his own time.............. be firm but kind and reward a positive response with kinds words in a warm tone
