Dartmoor navigator
Hi folks I have had a gun recently serviced and been charged for a new spring / seals etc. The sight is zeroed but I am struggling with rabbits at 20 ft! I am told that the output is 11.75 ft lbs but I find this hard to believe as the gun is hitting its targets (in this case rabbits) who are then running off. I am worried that I could end up injuring animals without seeing them off properly. I used a dead rabbit to check the penetration of the pellets - at 20 ft they are bouncing off its skull, at 1ft it cracked the skull but still didnt penetrate. Should I be going for soft body parts - or is this gun under powered???
John_R
Something is not right for sure, on face value it sounds extremely low powered. You should ask whoever told you it is running at 11.75 to prove it in front of you, or maybe even ask around to see if anyone else can chrono it for you. You should do this test with the pellets you are using to give a real indication.

pabs
No no no, there should be none of this ' bouncing off' malarky. Get it back to the place that 'serviced' it.

I know this sounds crazy but for some reason the pellets seem to lack real penertation into the soft springy scull, on the mums and dads the same shots are just fine. It's weird but true, chrono the rifle if your not sure. Personally IF i need to kill them young ones i heart /lung shoot them and get far better results, though again on adults such a shot is poor at best. Ok i am assuming a lot but if you hit an adult bunny in the brain area with a legal limit gun at 35-40 yds it is very dead
bruno22rf
I would strongly recommend that you go for the "soft body parts" if your gun is performing poorly after having it serviced-the "soft body parts" of the guy that did the work would be a great place to aim.Get it chrono tested after servicing next time and do not attempt shots at live quarry unless the gun has the required power.Any decent airgun shop should chrono a gun that they have serviced as a matter of course to ensure that its performance is within the legal limit-what would have happened if the gun was returned to you producing 14ft/lbs and you had been stopped by the boys in blue? Name and shame them.......

Name and shame them....... Well it did and it was, if you see what I mean. They told me it chrono'd it at 11.75. I questioned this when returning the gun yesterday and they actually sent it away for service and repair by a third party who chrono'd it - they didnt. Anyway they tested it again using my pellets and they tell me it comes in at 11.8 or 10.5 with shoddy pellets. I dont get it, I am puzzled I really am. Gnome of the Woods
That range is to big for just a pellet change! I would take the offer of the chrono and test it yourself. Zeroed at 20ft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most full power (10-11.5ft/lbs) air rifles are zeroed at between 25 and 35 yards not feet! Something truly amiss here I think. Let me clarify that: I zeroed at 20 yards, but then rechecked at 20 ft. If I move a target back to say 30 yards the drop off is quite severe... say down by 7 inches! I'm not happy, so I will take the gun off to another shop to be checked.
Gnome of the Woods
What Cal is it? Even at .22 it should be no more than 2" at 30yds over 20yds! I think you are right to be more than a little miffed.
