Smoking Using a BBQ

As a lover of all things BBQ, I'm considering adding an extra dimension to my cooking. To that end, has anyone attempted to introduce a smoke element to a gas BBQ. I'm thinking a small metal box filled with oak chips and placed on the grill alongside the meat with the BBQ lid closed. Would it work? Would the 15mins cooking time for the meat be long enough to introduce the smoke flavour?
