WoodyPopper
I shot a couple of pigeons this afternoon. Their crops were full of what what looked like green coconuts - but about the size of a BB. Very hard. I cut one open and it did have a sort of nut inside it. Can anyone tell me what they were please?

Fisherman Mike
I shot a couple of pigeons this afternoon. Their crops were full of what what looked like green coconuts - but about the size of a BB. Very hard. I cut one open and it did have a sort of nut inside it. Can anyone tell me what they were please? Could be redcurants or black currants they are ripping into them in the gardens and allotments around here...do they smell of Ribena.? activeviii
cherries, we see them on the trees around here stripping them
Kes
I would suggest they are ivy berries too - have one end which is a very distinctive shape a sort of shallow inverted cup with the remains of the flower - very hard, berries are dark green. Cherries are more circular and have no depression at the bottom. I cannot think birds would eat unripe cherries when there are ripe Ivy berries but then I've not seen it. WoodyPopper
Hmm. I don't think they're ivy berries - simply because there don't seem to be any berries at all on ivy at this time of year. I think cherries/blackcurrants is more likely.
JKD
I'd also suggest they are cherries. Got cherry trees on four of my garden shoots, and the woodies love scoffing them, mainly in the mornings and evenings They don't taste of cherry though the pigeons, that is atb Chris Edited May 31, 2011 by JKD
Beardo
I have damson and plums that look like little green coconuts at the moment but they're bigger, about 1cm long
