i can only try.......

Recommended Posts

i found these in asda today STEEL TENT PEGS :good:

so i bought them (hopeing they will do the job) for a bit of diy on the bottom of my hide poles! they are not heavy at all and hopefully will do the job nicely

i need to get some bolts and locking nuts before i can start, the pegs are curved over on the tops and they will act as a little bit of a foot plate. i will need to use 2 for each pole, you get 8 in the box and they are 9'' long and quite strong aswell. (also some rope and a rubber mallet)

here are some pics iv used an elastic band to show you what the finished job should look like when i get round to it this week hopefully.:good:

what do you guys think? and no i dont want to buy proper hide poles :good:

:hmm: I'd be tempted to take the pole to a point and add another bolt to pull the prongs of the pegs together - but it might work ok as you've got it. No real rights and wrongs and experimenting is half the fun

Progress report required when complete :good: :good:

I looked at faffing around with washing poles and spikes etc. but to be honest I got a set of proper poles (including bag) for £40. Probably an extra £20 compared to what you've used but well worth it imho.

i like having a go at little diy jobs poon, it saves me from doing the housework :good:

They won't work as you've shown them I'm afraid. In hard ground you will never get them in past the pole.

Ther are much better spikes out there but honestly, by the time you buy the bits to do a good job you won't be saving ver much. £40 gets you an essential bit if kit.

I like and do diy on bits but honestly you won't spend a better £40 on shooting kit. You can skimp on a net, you can save bundles making the gizmos, but a proper set of hide poles is a must in my books.

No doubt someone will come on here and show me a set of home made poles better than what you can buy, but for the average DIY'r who doesn't have access to materials and machinery it will still cost.

Sorry to burst your bubble, I felt the same when I started and wanted all the gear but couldn't afford it all at once.

I once used the washing line poles.

I hammered the ends flat, folded over the corners to make a point and hammered flat again.

Then I drilled the poles at the bottom to fit a long bolt, which was the foot peg.

I also carried a 2ltr bottle of water to soften the ground when it was hard and dry.

They worked well for about a year before they eventually surrendered

Had my UK Shoot-dolls-house ones ( http://www.ukshootwarehouse.com/shop/PIGEON+DECOYING+EQUIPMENT/Camo+Hide/Hide+Poles+Twist+Lock+x+4..html ) for about 4 years now, still in one piece and working perfectly :good:

I'm exactly the same as you Lee! I like to "tinker" about and I get a good feeling of satisfaction when I can "create" something like that which works and saves me a couple of bob too! This post is of particular interest to me as I am going to see my mate today to shorten some telescopic washing line props (£2.50 each at a local discount store) and try to "design" and fit some sort of a foot peg on them! My only concern with your idea is if there is enough of the top curve on the tent pegs to get your foot on to exert enough pressure if the ground is dry and hard - I am not saying that there isn't, just questioning it!

that could be easily altered with a thredded bolt and 2 locking nuts either side and make it long enough to act as a foot plate to push them in :good:

Good thinking mate. We were thinking of trying to Mig Weld something like that on if the metal on the poles is thick enough!

You will need to strengthen the pole inside by way of inserting dowel(at the base),otherwise the pole will fold under your body weight, trying to get it into hard ground

go to the search box in this section and type in hide poles  this has been covered before :good: theres a couple of posts that might be of use to you :good: BB
