Browning,

This method presumes you have a bullet extractor and vernier gauge.

Make up a dummy cartridge i.e. case and bullet.

Light a candle and use the smoke to mark the bullet head. When it is nice and black pop the cartridge into the breech and push the bolt home. When you extract the cartridge the bullet should have marks on it.

Repeat this again, but with a smaller overall length until you get no marks on the bullet.

When you have no marks on the bullet you have your overall length. Then you back off to whatever length you require. I usually give them 5/1000 "

:/

P.S. I've just seen Trevors reply...........his version might be a bit cleaner to do.

:)

Unfortunately Dave that would mean having to allow the Mrs into my gunroom,

which would mean I then have to start answering questions like:-

1) I thought you only had one shotgun, do you really need all those?

2) I thought you only had one rifle, do you really need all those?

3) What's this receipt here for?

Take a used cartridge, using a dremel cut 2 slots down the length of the neck then remove the burrs, this will make a head fit quite easily, chamber the round then remove and measure it with a comparator/vernier, I used to use the marker pen method but the head doesn't stop exactly on the rifling, it inevitably pushes a short way into it.

Browning,

I'll sign your passport to get back into Gods country, anytime !!

Cheers Sniper... :/

As GM says you need a Stoney Point AOL gauge from your friends down the road at Reloading Solutions

GM, Stuartp. This looks like a neat piece of kit, it may help take all the guesswork

ou of the job. Also, I didn't know they did Stoney Point products at Reloading Solutions. :) :(
