rabbitstopper
Just got myself some new decoys, and i'm aware of the usual decoy patterns but what sort of distance shall i have hide away from the decoys Thanks again
Cranfield
rabbit stopper, trial and error combined with a bit of experience will dictate where you put the decoys. A good principle is, that the furthest decoy from the hide. should still be in range of your gun. When shooting from new hide positions, don,t be too proud to walk out 30/35 paces and place a piece of stick (small bamboo cane) in the ground at points around your hide. It will certainly help you judge shootable birds.
rabbitstopper
So basically have the furthest at around 35yards then as thats the best max ranges and then just bring the others in as near as they need to go
number 1
i usally have them at around 15-30yards away from the hide ,but ihave the rook decoys a bit closer because they are a bit harder to bring down
Cranfield
I try to create a "landing zone" in my layout for the incoming pigeons. This "zone" is in perfect range. As the pigeons approach the "zone", I want them to look at the decoys and not the hide or me. So I don,t have any decoys "close" to my hide. The nearest will be 10 paces away (thats longer than you think). The relevancy of this depends on you hide location, the surrounding cover etc, but I think it is a good general rule. tim
"most" shotguns have the best pattern at 30-35 yds , mostly i put them out at 25 as the nearest and 40 the furthest if i can
rabbitstopper
What type of distance do you guys put between each decoy?? James
Cranfield
Depending on the pattern and how many decoys I have.......somewhere between 1 ft and 6 ft. I will sometimes have small "groups", rather than "lines". I don,t credit pigeons with super intelligence, but I do like to vary my layout so that it appears "fresh" to the birds. At least it makes me feel more confident. There are some good layout sketches on the home page of this site.
