Clydebuilt
been looking at the new Nikon ProStaff Rimfire models out this year and need a nudge in the right direction. i'll be mainly shooting rabbits during lamping forays, topped up with a few lazy evenings out for a donder and out plinking and practising off the sticks/bipods to keep my hand in every now and again so, from what I'll be using it for, what would you guys recommend for a 22lr rimfire the 4 x 36 or the larger 3-9x40 sized scope? im actually erring on the side of the fixed 4x36 for now, just to keep it simple but open to the pro's and con's of each if you have any?? its only going to be one of the two scopes mentioned above too thanks in advance
12borejimbo
I would go for the variable, when zeroing you can turn it up to 9, when out shooting just keep it a 5/6 that's what I do, I've got a bushnell 4-12x40 and use the high mag for target practice and keep it on 6/7 for bunny bashing, it gives you a bit more freedom or use if you know what I mean?
Clydebuilt
Yeah your prob right there Jimbo, I was trying to convince myself not to get a vari mag, old habits die hard, seen too many people fiddling when they should be taking the shot I use fixed scopes on my CF's but, like you mentioned, it will be great for zeroing and prob gather more light being a larger obj lens? Time to get dragged into the variable mag world cheers
Colster
I'm a big fan of fixed mag and the small front end wouldn't necessarily worry me. I have a 6x36 Leupold and it's a fantastic scope. Smaller front end means greater depth of field so it does have its benefits and small good glass will always give you a better image in low light than big low quality glass. The Prostaff is a great scope but I'd still want 6x rather than 4 on a rimfire.
apache
A baby bunny at 80 yards would by very tiny under 4X mag. Go for the variable.

the enigma
I bought a Prostaff 4-12x40 a few weeks ago to go on my HMR. I had been going to go for a 3-9x40,but when the dealer contacted the Nikon distributor, they told him that they could do either the 4-12x40 or 3-9x50 cheaper than the 3-9x40.I ended up paying £165 for mine.I think read somewhere that there's a new model coming out with finger adjustable turrets,so I reckon they're trying to clear the older stock. I'm very please with mine, they're great scope for the money. Edited June 18, 2011 by the enigma
SittingBull
I picked up the Prostaff 3-9x40 Nikoplex this morning. Seems pretty good - the variable magnification is fairly smooth and I don't think it would get in the way. The only thing that annoys me is that it fairly traditional in its zero adjustment in that you have to unscrew the caps and tweak it with a coin/screwdriver which does take a bit of time - no big problem though once it's setup. I'm reliably informed that it is quite good at keeping its zero. I'm fortunate enough to be an optician so I managed to wangle it for £57.
