1 of 5
Do different brands of cartridge really give better results than others? I can easily see why different brands of ammo work better or worse in centre/rim fire and airguns as they're precission tools, but a shotgun is more of a blunt instrument IMO. The only differences I've noted so far are barrel fouling is better or worse with some brands.
Catamong
Some brands "Hit" harder than others, on the shoulder as well as the bird, for Woodies the favourite for most people seems to be the 30gram "Clear Pigeon".
The Sniper
As I said in my other topic on cleaning my new Winchester 1400 ,I tried some 32g Starlight cartridges, as 32 g was supposed to work better in semi autos. That will be the last time I use those cartridges. I don't know why but they produced a lot of injured birds as opposed to instant kills that I usually get with clear pigeons. hunterswind9465
My clients use between 25 and 30 thousand Starlight 32g shells each year without any complaints, we used some 36g Rotwell special game loads and they were even better but hard on the shoulder. The Sniper
Hunterswind, Any idea what went wrong when I used them then ? Could it be they just didn't like my gun ? Or could it just be a psychological thing.....that is I prefer Clear Pigeon ?
rjimmer
The most important thing is to find a cartridge that throws an even pattern from the gun you use at the ranges you shoot at. Try a box of each brand/load on a piece of paper to make up your mind.
The Sniper
Yep that's what I suspected rjimmer. I just know the clear pigeons do a better job. When I get the time I will pattern the gun.
Hammergun
There are several factors which influence the behaviour of different cartridges in different guns. All guns af different types are slightly different in barrel construction. Shape of the chambers and forcing cones, size and shape of the chokes, length of cylinder section, and bore diameter will all play a very slight part in affecting the shot pattern. These factors will affect how the wad travels down the barrels, and how the shot is pushed.
