Teal
I would recommend an airifle to deal with your rat problem, you'll get several shots each time before the rats scatter, you can lie in wait using some bait which they can't pull away like a large slice of bread. Plus the cartridges you're looking to get for a garden gun will be expensive I think and quite hard to come by
Yorkshire Pudding
Or how about the local terrier society??? You'll meet new friends , they will enjoy the sport , you'll save some brass and you may get the bug.. Look in your local paper for terrier and lurcher shows...or you could try asking on http://www.moochers.co.uk all the best yis yp

Hammergun
I use 9mm during the day as the rats move too fast for sighting an airgun, and an air rifle at night with a lamp. Ive also been out with the 9mm at night with a gun lamp attached. I'd just get a cheap garden gun for £50 or so. You'll only usually get one shot off anyway. You'll need a FAC for a 5 shot No3 Fiocchi No3 9mm carts 10 shot are about £6.50 per 50. Ferrets are good at ratting!
