Hammergun
A .410 is quite a specialist beast, and mainly used for short range or stationary targets such as roost shooting. As there are a lot less pellets, they require much more skill in handling than normal bore shotguns. Having said that, one of my mates is deadly with one and can hit almost as much as many others do with a 12 bore. The main advantage is that they are light to carry, and make less of a bang than a 12 bore. You may see the folding types which fold completely in half. These were favoured by the poachers as they could easily be hidden under long coats. Also popular with ferreters as they can be carried in the kit bag and are good for close range work. You can pick up a 2nd hand .410 folding Belgian single barrel from as little as £50. Double barrelled Belgians are typically about £150 - £200. Also commonly available are the Webley or Anschutz bolt action .410 shotguns. There are of course a range of new automatics and o/u guns, but I would never justify the expense for such a use. Other drawback is that because they are less common than 12 bores, the cartridges are more expensive.
red_stag88
You can often find Bolt action .410s in shooting mags going for around £75. If you hit with one of them, you'll hit with any thing!
BigDave15
I use a side by side spanish one for roosting. There brillant for this as there isnt much shot in them when or if you eat them. I also use mine for rabbits rats and tree rats I stick to sitting targets but thats because Im new to shooting you could certainly kill any thing cleanly at shot range flying. The carts are a rip off though. Still there nice little guns.
Whimple Hunter
hia . ive litteraly just come back from a local gun shop having put a deposit on on a bran new single barrel 410 for £125.its a lovely little gun . its a baikal.ill be using it round my uncles farm as an all rounder.mostly sitting targets although he often gets low flying birds on his land.ive used 410.s in the past and there brilliant guns although the shellls are prity expensive compared to the mighty 12. but i assure you its worth paying that little bit extra for tha performance and simpli enjoyment that it gives you. ok.
