SteveG
They are pretty good loads of torque so will pull anywhere the limit for off road, will really be how good the tyres are, I saw one the other day with a big set of mudpluggers on so might be worth looking at what tyures you can get for it
Cosd
These are supposedly very competent off road, I looked at the newer model myself but changed my mind as I didn't like the finish of the interior, very American! Read some good reviews on them though!
straightshooter1
i prefer the grand cherokee I have had 4 and the best is the 2.7td which is a mercedes engine the previous engine was a peugeot 3.1td which is unreliable but I must say the seats are the most comfortable ever
paul041075
Awesome off road, think they spring over axle so give great articulation. Look forward to the joys of visiting the petrol pump, as they are thirsty (unless you have LPG). Seem to be more reliable than the diesels. al4x
didn't they used to have problems with the rear diff around that age? Guessing he paid not a lot for it its luxury driving with a big petrol lump. So if you don't go far it makes for quite a nice drive. 15mpg or so would crucify me

bigmanuk
Yeah around that time the cherokee suffered badly with rear diff problems. Get your mate to check to see if it is whining; I know about half a dozen people that had problems with the rear diffs. Jeep did sell some 'special oil' to apparantly fix the problem; however it is pretty much just really thick diff oil that makes it a bit quieter. Doesnt stop them from having problems really. Great fun to drive though.
