demonwolf444
Finally got an XS78 with 12 co2 cartridges and some RWS flat heads in .177 for £119.95, The gun i think is the standard model although the wood is allot darker and so it could be the " delux " model, put two cartrdiges in it in the shop and made sure it was working properly, so i took the gun home and started putting it through its paces, i took some shots at my 15 yard "gong" and was hitting it everytime with the stock open sights - Anyway everything seemed fine so i took it out to the next set of targets i have which are about 35 ish yards away, i was hitting the hanging bottles everytime and the hanging can everytime i couldnt hit my 1 inch spinners 9 times out of ten though as the sights are a bit primitive and chunky and my eyes were struggling to focus, although when i did hit it once it spann which is a good sign. I have a can hanging at 50 ish yards ( i say ish because my range estimation is appaling ) and once i had adjusted the elevation one noch up ( the only thing adjustable on the sights ) i could hit it most times. The gun is incredibly fun to shoot and whilst bench resting you can rest another pellet near the bolt so that when you next cycle the bolt it falls in giving you a quick (ish ) follow up shot - not sure i would do it in the field, Cannot wait to put a scope on it and punch some paper and upload some pictures i took today, Im liking .177 cal a bit better now and when an unsuspecting pigeon landed on the stables that stand parralell to my 35yard ish targets i took a shot and so it had its first kill which was just in front of the wing, but it did the job. Im pretty impressed with the gun wasnt sure weather or not i would get a dud, after mixed experience with smk, just followed the advice of this forum and cleaned the barrel first there was allot of guey crapp in there but a good old clean did the trick i also put a bit of oil on the screw cap and gave the threads a clean but aside from that its the bog standard SMK XS78 and its alright, No mods as of yet but that doesnt mean i wont be having a tinker later on...Pictures and more words to come when i scope it! Fat toad
Hi it's sounds like you are having fun which is what a hobby should be fun let me know how you get on with scope and paper you will be surprise instead of hitting bottle or can you will be able to pick where you hit them Frank
demonwolf444
yeh its pretty interesting shooting something that doesnt recoil, especially as im finding more time for the shotgun recently but i have to keep out of the sun dor a while due to come chemical burns, Was anxious that it would be a good one - with it being SMK you often hear of these guns coming out of the factory at 3ft lbs.. but you get what you pay for, looking at an air arms, Next nice evening ill go out and give it a proper test but im in london till wednesday
SteveieP
You would do well to register on the Uk Chinese airgun forum. A ready source of info' on how to strip, tune & re-seal etc. Frequently, low power is caused by simple things like a crushed transfer port seal. A bit of your own time & a new set of seals for only a few quid & you'll have the power up to respectable levels & as you've already found, accuracy isn't a problem. A properly fettled 78 is capable of holding it's own against a gun costing many times the price. http://ukchineseairgunforum.myfreeforum.org/ Give it a look & if I'm lying, you can sue me .lol
demonwolf444
power seems to be alright so far - going to crony it at some point just busy week. But i was practicing on the spinners this evening and it shoots a bit high but i hit all four one inch spinners and the reset spinner which due to the rust dont half take some spinning soo it appears to have plenty of power and delt with the pigeon at a reasonable distance so! Ill make an account when i return
demonwolf444
Well still havent found the time for pictures and and havent patterned out on paper targets yet but I have put a mil dot 4 x 40 on it. As i was impressed with the iron sights i put hollow mounts on it so i could still use the iron sights as i find it very satisfying using iron sights. They are mounted completely on the barrel so there is little room for error if the barrel gets nocked. I found that the plastic barrel band needs to be replaced asap, the stock plastic band just allows to much movement if in the field you nocked the barrel it can seriously throw off the pellets, I dare not tighten the plastic band as ive read of it snapping, and whilst im waiting for a metal one to arrive would still like to be able to shoot it, although i know somepeople use it with no barrel band ( seen it in pictures ) again it is inherantly accurate for a budget gun, I can hit the one inch spinners every time at ~ 35 yards, and could hit the peel away soup can top at ~44 yards prett much every time, again my distance judgement it terrible and i always mean to get a tape measure out and find out for sure but like most things i plan on doing i never find the time, More to come... soon. welshwarrior
If you remove the barrel band completely you need to add a second breach grub screw drilled and taped into the barrel to stop the knocking/movement

nobby
Hi Demon, I picked one of these up today and got to say I'm proper impressed with it. I tested before I bought and at the 15 yd range I was getting just over half inch group from a standing position. That was straight out the box with open sights. It looks really well put together and I got the dealer to run it through the chrono to see how much was needed to get her near the limit and it came out at 7ft/lb. Read that they're really easy to tune so that will be the next thing but as I say I really impressed. Will do for a spare summer rifle. demonwolf444
I have been impressed with mine! thinking about buying a tr robb tuneing kit and a multishot adapter, might make one though, see if i can find some aluminium lying around! already bought a steel barrel band for it, and it looks better and there is no worrys of it snapping, never done many serious mods to an air rifle but it looks simple enough, i havent chrono'd mine yet however the four pigeons ive had with it would tell you it works i know i keep saying thiss but pics soon! nobby
The man I bought it from said you can get the tune up kits a lot cheaper just ask around on the chinese airgun forum. Also there is a bloke on there that does everything, 4cartridge chambers , silencers, mod stocks the works he is called porky yorky. Think I'll definately be buying the multi shot mag. Itching to get it somewhere near the limit and get hunting with it. Edited September 4, 2011 by nobby
secretagentmole
Picked one up at an auction for under £20, boxed, though lightly used, put a couple of co2 bulbs in, chronoed it, the little blighter was running at 10.5, we bought it as a present for a mate who is finding using a break barrel painful due to arthritis. He loves the little whizz bang. Especially the puff of co2 that comes out the barrel when it is fired. He uses it for pigeon hunting and is very happy with it! nobby
Just came back from PorkyYorky's and had a tune up to 11ft/lb, a four cartridge tube and a new bolt fitted for £60 quid. Took him about 1.5 hours. He can fit a bulk fill nipple for £15 and the amount of Mods the guy can do is excellent. He showed me a few of his and gave me a shoot of a couple and he does a very good job. If you need anything look him up on the chinese airgun forum and he can post you whatever you need if diy is your thing (not for me as someone replaced my hands with lump hammers) Nobby
