hi guys,

anyone made the jump to progressive shotshell reloading and liked it?

i`m mainly single stage at the moment, just bought a new single stage machine.

but i was thinking progressive with a rotary plate...

anyone used one and did it work well?

I have five progressives, but don't use them for 'all in one loading'. Each one has been modified and does a different job. Some of the stations have non-standard tooling.

Example: 1 I have two MEC 650s. One set for 70mm fired cases, the other set for 67mm new cases. The latter has a non-standard crimp 'cutter'. None of my presses are used to dispense powder; only shot. The final crimp station on each is 'up and out of the way'. Shells are spun from 'crimp start' as in a factory.

Example: 2 The three 9000Gs (12, 12 and 28 gauge) are used for de-prime, re-size and re-prime only, ejecting the primed cases cases down the chute. The crimp starter, crimp and final are removed.

The primed cases are dosed with powder and wads in batches of 1000.

I guess I load in a different way to a lot of blokes!

Hi Cookoff013

I have 2 Progressives,(Hornedy Pacific.366. 12g & 20g.) and 2 single stage presses. (MEC 600 Jr. 12g. 28g .) and get on fine with all of them, Like sitsinheges say's when you have a problem its usually powder and shot on the floor. I find this is when you loose your concentration, like when my neighbour comes into the workshop fof a chat, I think that when the machines are set up correectly they work fine.

Mick. :good:

i just bought a sizemaster, but really toyed with the idea of a progresive.

i just think it would make my time more productive. i`ll be selling my 600jr as the sizemaster is a better press anyway.

so the money from that would be invested in something else...

i tend to like exotic cartridges, but mass producing any cartridge on a single stage machine is time consuming.

i seriously enjoy teaching on a single stage machine. i find it simpler

from what i gather with the progressive loaders, is to add a shell, and wad. the machine does the rest.

also found out, if the recipe is a poor fit, progressive isnt the way to go.

i may invest in one.

i mainly reload virgin cases, i bought a job lot eons ago.

how exactly do you get powder in the cases? do you use a powder measure?

i use the bushings system, got every even bushing, from 12-40. if i`m alittle light, it doesnt matter. i only get the odd bushings if i am extremely desperate.

i did have a brief stint with a adjustable, but got too frustrated with it. i got it working smoothly in the end, after alot of fiddling.

i really like the bushing system.

i might get mec progressive, as i have the bushings for it anyway.

I have Hornady/Pacific 366 and Ponsness-Warren progressives and can load up to 300 an hour. Had no real problems once you get used to them, once you have a reliable once fired 12ga shell case stick with them.I use once fired Eley olympic trap for 7 1/2 and Eley gamebore Supergame for 6's.

I think we all start off dumping shot and powder at the beginning but you soon get used to it.

I like my progressive i have the MEC 9000 and i invested in a universal charge bar ( £50 )worth every penny i can reload 100 carts in less than 20 minutes you do have the occasional cock up.

But that is mainly the crimp not crimping right on average 3 or 4 per 100 then i just open them up and reuse the components and scrap the cases.. This is mainly caused as i use hulls that have been fired before some more than once.. :good: :good: I first started with a single stage press but over all i would not go back to single stage as i could not keep up with the cartridges i am using..
