I agree about the bait fishing its far too early there is a huge risk of deep hooking at this time of year and pike really can struggle to survive after a hard fight in warm temps , in fact I would go as far as to say that the craze for summer lure fishing has had a major impact on our pike stocks here in the fens ( that and our eastern european mates). I still think that pike fishing should be a sport to enjoy between oct 1st and the end of the season.

PLH1966
Bit early for me, a trip to France at the end of the month, then Piking on the broads & the Ouse from October onwards. May all your fish be big ones!

I must admit after pike fishing every winter for about 25 years things have got so bad that I have not bothered for the last two. Its a shame cause I had a lot of good fish out of the drains up to 30lb 6oz

.philmypower.
Sorry for the late reply guys, Didn't manage to land a fish but had a cracking day. Hooked into a lovely pike poss close to double figures but snapped me off last minute did get a glimpse of him lovely creature. My brother inlaw landed 2 which I'm sure he won't let me forget for some time. Going to have another go next week. Was using dead bait but I made myself a single hooked wire trace hair rig as no trebles are allowed on the lake, I put a piece of foam on the rig to raise the bait, this tactic has worked in the past but didn't seem to have much luck yesterday. Spoke to a guy a few pegs away roach bashing and he said he had lost a few fish to pike whilst reeling them in during the day so might consider using a lure. What a your thoughts, not done any lure fishing before what lure would you recommend or does it depend on what works on the day. Sorry no pics but I thought posting a photo of me watching my rod ( no pun intended ) would be boring. Thanks again
Dunkield
My answer would be a live roach, but you may not be allowed to do that. I only river fish weirs for pike and we only ever use livebaits. I have spun we had run out of bait or they were hard to catch, but in my fairly limited experience you tend to hook a lot of jack doing that, still good fun on the right tackle nonetheless I am sure more experienced lure fishermen can advise, there are huge artificials now maybe that is the answer? .philmypower.
Thanks, I'll ask if live baiting is allowed as I'm unsure, I'll get one next time
fat_jay
Lives deffinatly get you more nibbles, but I prefer a large static dead bait to tempt the big girls. Maybe wobbling a smallish dead on a large single hook would be.a good option?
jimbo1
that comment by jay on wobbling is good advice....do it with a dead trout or small perch about the length of your hand and mount it on a uni rig...thats a single number4/6/8 hook at the top of the trace...and a size 4/6/8 treble on the bottom. mount the single through the mouth of the bait and the treble in the flank or near the anal fin....cast out and retrieve gently lifting and dropping the rod tip now and again as you bring it back...but dont retrieve it to quickly...maybe even letting the bait sink and rest for 30 seconds or so before continuing....you have to bear in mind big pike arent after chasing fish about at top speed...they`re an ambush predator first and formost....quick to top speed...but no stamina to keep it....your best bet for tips and advice is to visit the PAC (pike anglers club of great britain.) website....a national body solely dedicated to the pike angler....loads of tips and how to`s on fish handling (VERY IMPORTANT).. rigs....baits...lure fishing....boat fishing...everything...and some pdf`s you can download and read too... heres a link... http://www.pacgb.co.uk/ i could go on....but to much info involved for me to cover here enjoy james
