ME
set up camp and make the locals lives hell, then when the locals have had enough make the locals you know the non travelling taxpaying community move so they become the travellers, then the proper travellers (you know the ones who did not really travel for 10 years) will become the locals, what a spiffingly good idea wonder why the council never thought of that one Probably one of the longest sentences in the thread. Maybe we should force them to dress as monkeys and bring your lot down to sort them out? The site doesn't actually back on to many people. The £18 million is only going to clear SOME of the site as some of them have rights to stay there. So as a resident, would you want to have the proper market value paid for your house and move OR still have your house worth 50% of it's value, spend £18 million on moving some of the travellers on (but not all) and still have to back on to the site? (which will no doubt slowly fill up again afterwards) Yes, it isnt fair on all the rest of us law abiding tax payers, but it would be a better way to see value for our tax money. woodcock11
Could these Irish travellers not sod off back to Ireland. This is a simplistic and offensive view - Ireland has exactly the same problem with "travellers" setting up camp illegally. A racist view is not the answer. I agree with the great majority of posts on this thread that travellers [as they call themselves] are a real problem. I genuinely believe that [a] local authorities bend over backwards to try and help them and they are just not interested - as they [the travellers] have vested interests in their peripatetic lifestyle and this sort of control by LA's would attract [a] unwelcome attention from HMRC who are very interested in the "black economy" and from the police who would be very interested in things that somehow go missing. A large and uncontrollable camp is a godsend to them as it is so easy for them to run rings around the authorities - anyone can see that. But please let us not go in for stereotyping and let's cut out stupid racist comments about the Irish [in any shape or form] "sodding off back" to Ireland. geordieh
I was in Crays Hill at lunchtime today. I saw an ITV satelite van and a helicopter. This thing is gonna kick off. The Dale Farm site is about 5 minutes drive from where I work and 15 minutes approx from where I live. I have hardly seen any of the people that live there to be honest. I understand that there has to be one law for all but kicking them off is gonna cost £18 million (if I have it correct?) I struggle to see the value in moving them. Spend the money on relocating the direct neighbours and forming an exclusion zone around the place. Then make them go legal paying council tax, applying for planning etc. Get 1000 riot police in give the caravan utilising nomadic travellers 24 hours to get out or face a few cracked skulls, give the police free rein and exemption from prosecution, the next time you have to clear one of these sites it will be easy Geordie

(the name escapes me) So a private enterprise are going to profit from this. It will not be keeping our Bobbys in jobs. Diceman
The good people of Ireland don't like them any more than we do. I saw they way they dealt with them once, a big coach full of "settled" village residents arrived at the camp and, um, vigorously encouraged them to travel somewhere else. They packed up there and then. The local coppers did not appear to see any need to intervene.

fatcontroller
This is fact not hearsay or speculation. I have some land in the Kent area. My friends and neighbours are travellers. They have been granted planning permission for 3 mobile homes. My land is next to their land. I have been refused planning permission for 1 mobile home as I do not have Gypsy Status ?.
