Mightymariner
I managed to get out today and unexpectedly got my record bag - 62. I know it's not huge compared to some but I am well happy, especially as I rarely do any recce work these days. Went to a mate's farm in the Wolds, and after a drive round settled on a wheat stubble recently cut. It had big round bales so I thought, what the hell, a hide smack in the middle of the field. I did this because of the gales (I didn't fancy a branch or worse on my head) and because the birds seemed to be scattered all over the 25 acre stubble. Three bales in a U, net across front and bit of netting for a roof, decoys in two straggly lines either side of the hide and we were off. The wind worked to my advantage as it kept the birds really low and it muffled the shots. In fact, almost every bird I shot resulted in more coming in. They came in spurts, so many in fact I thought I may get a 100. I reckon I might have done if I had started earlier (I didn't get set up till 1pm). I counted 85 empties for 62 birds and one rook which landed right in front of my hide. Incidently, I wonder if the birds suffer from some sort of wind blindness as I had the front netting low, and while I sat very still, they could see me, but they still came straight in. Anyhow, birds off to game dealer, I need more cartridges and ready for another day!

Sounds like a very good day , you were brave to go out in these gale force winds too .Think my hide would have ended up a mile away as it has on a few occasions in these conditions .Did you peg it down with poles ? I have used bungee ropes to anchor to trees or hedge branches before.

Mightymariner
I used wooden clothes pegs to fix netting to the bales, I positioned so I was fairly sheltered inside. Main problem was decoys blowing off their pegs. It was certainly safer than being along the trees! Aha, Caddyman, it has taken me years to reach these heady heights but most of it is down to luck! Will try my best on Friday to send you a few.
