miffy
I have had my .22/250 checked over to see why it was shooting so bad and the news that came back from the riflesmith was that the barrel has been shot out. So i paid a visit to a local gunshop and came away with a .243 Tikka T3. What i'm after is some info on reloading the .243, I could do with some advice regarding powder for the lighter bullet 75/87 grain Vmax (fox)and powder for the 100 soft points (deer) or possibly a powder suitable for both weights. I would appreciate advice regarding bullet selection for deer, I'll be shooting mostly Roe with some munty's and fallow. I have searched the net and my own reloading collection but just wondered what experiences any of you guys have had......just to give me a head start

miffy
Tikka t3 .243, lovely gun, which model do you go away with? Gibby I came away with the synthetic blued, its not my prefered choice of gun but i needed a new rifle as the 250 is knackered, I would have bought the sauer outback but the CSA are bleeding me dry so the T3 it has to be, not that i'm complaining as they are nice rifles

Subsonic Flyer
I have developed the following loads for my .243 that may be of use. RE22 42.5g - Sierra Prohunter 100g - COL 2.635 - Velocity (tested) 3040 fps - Group Av 0.4" RE22 43.5g - Nosler Partition 100g - COL 2.635 - Velocity (tested) 3020 fps - Group Av 0.7" The Sierras are very accurate and great for Roe but a little to soft for Reds often failing to exit. The Partitions are great for the larger deer holding together very well but at the cost of a little accuracy and more meat damage. These loads are close to max so start with 10% less and work up. Pity it went when it did but, it's earnt its keep thats for sure. I've shot just about everything possible with it over the years including rats, rabbits, pigeons, crows, magpies, squirrels etc. I'm sure the .243 will be worthy of a place in my cabinet

Just goes to show, it is not the case. The .243 should last longer and is a very versatile caliber, with many bullet waights ect. All rifles get shot out sooner or later and the fact that mine went so soon is mainly due to the fact that i didn't clean it with copper solvent in 4 years. I know a keeper that shot his .222 out and one day the .223 owners will need a new barrel/rifle. I think that the £600 ish that a bought the rifle for 6 years ago works out to fairly good value Can't wait to get the .243 set up Dream on baldy!!! Frank
is mainly due to the fact that i didn't clean it with copper solvent in 4 years. Exactly miffy. Thats why i allways tell people to clean their centerfire rifles after each use, no matter how many shots they have fired. Proper cleaning, does not wear out a barrel, instead, it keeps it in tip top condition. A caliber like the .22-250, has to be cleaned everytime its used, all high velocity centerfires should. Another thing people are afraid of is the bronze brush. A load of BS as far as im concerned. A a bronze brush, if used correctly, will in no way wear out or scracth a barrel. Bonze brush is the only thing that will scrub out COPPER. Browning
Miffy, My load of choice for my T3 Hunter is 46gn H414, Federal 210 primer. This is for 75gn Vmax in Federal brass. Currently set to .01" off lands. I'm working up a 100gn soft point load this coming weekend as I've just about shot out my initial Federal factory loads. Frank
. Damage to a barrel whilst cleaning is usually caused by the cleaning rod and not the brush used Very true miffy. Thats why its best to use a one piece coated rod, like Parker Hale, or Tipton.
miffy
Stainless steel brush to clean a barrel, I hope your joking? Hey Frank, what would you know about 22-250, I though you were scared of them? . Mine is still singing after 2500 rounds but I always use moly bullets and only clean it every couple of months. Miffy, How come you didnt just rebarrel it? 600 new pounds gets you any calibre you want and will be better than anything off the shelf? No i aint kidding about the stainless brush I didn't clean mine with anything other than a pull through, and i don't think it did it any favours by having it sat at the police station for 10 months unused with a dirty barrel??? I have still got the rifle and i am gonna rebarrel it when my riflesmith gets a barrel to fit, We gonna choose the calibre when he gets the barrel as he has a fair few reamers. I think frank is scared of the .22/250
