i have been asked the question by a localish butcher - who was under the impression that i would need a game handling licence to sell the odd rabbit / pigeon to him ;

i had an understanding that i did not - but needed some concrete info ;

found it here ; (sorry if this has been put up before - but good info which may be of interest to others)

So let me get this striaght, as I'm a little lost. Say I shoot 20 woodpigeons over a local farm, and the head chef at X pub offers me £X per bird. Can I sell him that many once a week, every week, without having to aquire a licence of any sort or similar or will I need to undertake some sort of training/get a licence?

we are a small farm butchers and we are only allowed to buy pigeon and rabbits from a licensed game dealer according to our local health inspector

thats interesting - the above link is to the FSA, and the document is apparently official guidance :hmm:

it would be worth asking the local inspector specfically about the exemption mentioned? i would be very intersted to see what the response is if you do get the chance :good:

Hmm I thought unprepared in the fur/feather you could sell small numbers but as soon as you prepare you need hygiene certs etc? What traceability do they expect from wild game? The area it was shot in? The land owners details? It's wild not farmed, there is no paperwork till it arrives on the block!

http://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/pdfs/draftwildgameguide.pdf FLow chart makes interesting reading, might be worth referring to the office that deals with meat inspectors for better guidance.

Your Local health inspector....just who is that, what is his title and who does he work for? He needs educating! :yes::yes:

Back in 2007 I had to ram this down the throat of my local authority who were giving my Game dealer a hard time, they had NEVER heard of it!

Just because some "official" makes a dumb comment it doesn't mean he knows what he is talking about!

gave him a bell today to see what he has to say and this is what HE SAID

YES you can supply a small amount to your butcher in the fur or feather after you have shot it BUT if you are storing it for a period of time ie over night you will need to get your premises where they are being stored checked out by your local health inspector,

also if you are working on them ie gutting them again you will need to get your premises where the work is being done inspected,

and you will also want to get third party liability insurance in case someone down the chain gets food poisoning as it could come back to you.

and before you jump on this dekers have you heard the saying dont shoot the messenger lol
