pegasus bridge
i have been asked the question by a localish butcher - who was under the impression that i would need a game handling licence to sell the odd rabbit / pigeon to him ; i had an understanding that i did not - but needed some concrete info ; found it here ; (sorry if this has been put up before - but good info which may be of interest to others) http://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/pdfs/wildgameguide0611.pdf ps yes you can sell small amounts of game to a butcher. Browning
My understanding of this is that you are OK to sell small amounts of wild game directly to the end consumer, but require a Wild Game Meat Hygeine Certification to sell to anyone that will put the meat into the food chain i.e. Game dealers, butchers etc.

cant hit rabbits 123
So let me get this striaght, as I'm a little lost. Say I shoot 20 woodpigeons over a local farm, and the head chef at X pub offers me £X per bird. Can I sell him that many once a week, every week, without having to aquire a licence of any sort or similar or will I need to undertake some sort of training/get a licence? pegasus bridge
i would say yes - it would come down to the interpretation of 'small numbers' - i think this would cover a single shooter for a lot more than 20 birds? pegasus bridge
we are a small farm butchers and we are only allowed to buy pigeon and rabbits from a licensed game dealer according to our local health inspector colin thats interesting - the above link is to the FSA, and the document is apparently official guidance it would be worth asking the local inspector specfically about the exemption mentioned? i would be very intersted to see what the response is if you do get the chance
colin lad
we have to be able to show a traceable record of all meat we sell, also before i worked at the farm shop i worked in wholesale meat and we had to get an eec license to supply other butchers shops colin
HDAV
Hmm I thought unprepared in the fur/feather you could sell small numbers but as soon as you prepare you need hygiene certs etc? What traceability do they expect from wild game? The area it was shot in? The land owners details? It's wild not farmed, there is no paperwork till it arrives on the block! Dekers
we are a small farm butchers and we are only allowed to buy pigeon and rabbits from a licensed game dealer according to our local health inspector colin Your Local health inspector....just who is that, what is his title and who does he work for? He needs educating! Back in 2007 I had to ram this down the throat of my local authority who were giving my Game dealer a hard time, they had NEVER heard of it! http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2007/2007/contents/made Just because some "official" makes a dumb comment it doesn't mean he knows what he is talking about!
