geordieh
and your point is ? And his point is a larsen trap is for catching magpies not foxes Geordie
njc110381
I'm not a fan of snares myself but a cage trap is very humane. If you catch nextdoors cat you can let it go with no signs of being caught. The same can't be said for a snare. If your funds are limited it's easy enough to make a Fox cage out of Hazel sticks. Another thing I have thought about, what if you get a Badger in a Fox snare? I wouldn't want to try to get him out of it that's for sure! Redditch
Don't use a 22LR for foxes, minimum is really a 17HMR or 22WMR, and with these you SHOULD really keep the ranges to 60 metres body shot, and 80 metres head shot to be absolutely sure of killing it with one shot. Anything above those ranges I would advise a CF. I know people do shoot and kill with 22LR, and also at greater range with 17HMR and 22WMR, but I like to leave nothing to chance, better keep the ranges short rather than EVER having an animal wounded instead of dead with the first shot Good luck
njc110381
Shooting a Fox with a .22lr requires a very high level of skill. It just doesn't have the shock power of the larger rounds. I've done it loads of times but given the choice I'll knock them over with my Hornet or .223 every time. I really think a Hornet would be a good choice in this situation. Usually if someone isn't home loading I would say .223 but with the ground being so small the smaller the rifle better chance you have of getting it. The Hornet will down most things out to 100 yards.
sixhills 69
"Just be responsible and make sure what you shoot at dies immediately!", "After all a .22 cf round will drop anything if you plant it between the eyes at ? 2 yards". Please tell me this is a typo "or do you need to go to spec savers" For a CF or any section 1 firearm you need land and the need for the caliber to use on that land, and all the land you intend to use that firearm on needs to be passed i have over 500acres which is passed for CF apart from 1 field which splits my permision due to this i had to fight for the 100acres to be cleared for CF. Northhants are very strict for now Bait up and use your best tool use BB carts. plenty of info on here of which ones to use.. Get your land sorted and sitck in for your ticket.. good luck :good:
Seamus
Thanks for the continued replies! On Sunday I was granted permission to shoot over the neighbouring fields (specifically to target foxes for now) so that's a result. I'm meeting up with the landowner again in a couple of weeks to hopefully extend that to pigeons/rabbits etc., so that's a bit of a bonus. My FAC application is going in this week. That'll teach me to have too many windows open and be having an argy bargy in one of the other ones.
Seamus
Have you tried anything on Charlie yet mate? Shottie, etc? I met with the neighboring land owner on Friday night just to make absolutely sure everything is above board and written down; So as soon as he gets a copy of my licence and insurance he's going to provide permission in writing (which includes using shotgun on his land as well as shooting from mine over it). I'm still waiting for my updated licence following the address change (which is a whole different story of irritation). Will update the thread shortly.
