digger
ive just invested in some spoons and rapala plugs.my question is do i tie direct to the front of the spoon or use a swivel ? the rapala ones are gorgeous fish imitations so i guess i just tie the line direct to them ? any advice appreciated
Cranfield
I vary it, depending what I'm fishing for and where I'm fishing. In freshwater, I always use a wire trace (if pike are present). In sea water, I use braided reel line to a swivel, then a 15 lb fluorocarbon leader to a lure clip , which I attach to the lure (allows for quick lure changes). I use the leader to absorb some of the shock of the strike, because braid has no give (also bass, pollack etc have teeth). Straight through braid, means lots of pull outs and lost fish. The swivel between reel line and leader does not affect the movement of the lure.
flytie
Digger, definately use a swivel for your spoons, and try putting a bead above the swivel so the swivel cannot enter the tip ring! On your rapala's use the knot (rapala knot) that they recommend on the little piece of paper in the box they come in. I like to use a weaker mono trace below the swivel when fishing on rivers so I do not lose all the line if i have to break it off, I tend to use braid now with a mono trace (wire too if pike fishing). Conversely when sea fishing I like to use a shock leader that is much stronger than the mainline. Great sport, enjoy yourself! Ft

digger
sorry, should have made it clearer.i will be fishing for tarpon, barra and kingfish in tobago. i am also considering dead baiting but im not sure if using the same technique as i do for pike would work ? i will be fishing from a jetty and rocks so had hoped to use a bung but im not sure if the usual terminal tackle will be ok ( trebles on a rig ). thanks for the above replies, can shot be added to the leader to enable me to cast further ? digger
if i could work out how to id post a few pics of last years catch.its a great place to fish but knocks the hell out of tackle,a tarpon over 70 lbs can do some serious damage to the drag on your reel ! i hooked one near that size and it snapped my line like a twig after five minutes.i have to shore fish as i took a canoe out and was seasick :o
