-ben-
Hi I have a black lab she is about 3 she picks up pheasants and partiges with no problem but struggles with pigeons for the reason she gets a mouth full of feathers. she has picked up the od pigeons here and there but she does not now that i have started going pigeon shooting she picks the bird up the drops it with a mouth full of feathers she then tries to pick it up again getting more feathers in her mouth. she is fine with other game aslong as it isent a pigeon is there any way i can stop this i thing she would retrive the bird is she didnt drop it and then go and pickit up again, if she was to pick it up and bring it back straing away i think that the feathers woulden bother her as much. is there any way i can stop this behavior cheers for any advice
roadkill
I know dogs are not to ken on pigeon feathers , you could go back to training with a pigeon in a stocking then after a few weeks try cold retrieves then after a couple of weeks then try warm bids. Fatcatsplat
She's 3 now so fully mature - If she don't like pigeons, she don't like pigeons!! The feathers are much looser in pigeons than on game bird and the dogs tend to get a big old mouthful every time they retrieve. My Clumber is younger, but she seems to be learning to handle the pigeons in a gentler way as she doesn't get as many floaters in her gob! bi9johnny
go back to the pigeon in a nylon stocking and do it for a while not just a couple of goes once she will come right i've had this before

straightbarrel
yh im going to try her with another gundog and let her watch and learn of her and hopefully she will get the hang of it She obviously knows how to do it but is reluctant to carry them. If it was my problem I would be plucking the body first then slowly building up the amount left on them until she was confident enough to pick them up without a problem. Short retrieves of 5 yards and mixed with dummy retrieves to vary things a bit. Clearing her mouth as soon as possible after each retrieve and soaking them thouroughly and running your hand over them once or twice before chucking for the short retrieve could also help when building up. To her, picking and carrying these things = bad experiences, try and make every retrieve she has of them for a while, a good rewarding experience.
