MiLisCer
I see people have avoided this one?! A good dog does not come in a bad colour! Not that long ago, people were saying you would never get a good working Chocolate - There are now several good Chocs with FT awards, I have an OFTW Choc - as do John and Sandra Halstead (They might have 2 or 2 actually) and JH Junior too, amongst quite a few others too. One man and his lab
I agree it is much easier to find a good black labrador than any other, and as a black lab owner I wouldn't have any other. £500 will get you a very good pupil and then it's up to you to do the rest. I'd never leave the dog more than four hours at a time unless kenneled with others outside. How easy are they to train? what a good question. In short a lab is the easiest and most versitile gundog to train and there are lots of good trainers out there to help but do your research and if you don't like their methods, don't be afraid to walk away. 2 good books: Gundogs Training and Field Trials by P.R.A.Moxon A trilogy of good books by Lez Graham, The pet gundog Good luck Edited December 21, 2011 by One man and his lab

labstaff
There are some good working chocolate labs. Look at Ged Leesons "Styleside" affix. He's the only person (I think!!)to qualify a choc lab for the retriever championships.
kent
You know what they say, a lab is born half trained & a springer dies half trained. They also say some of them die that way "half trained" I couldn't care less if a Lab was Yellow, red or choc- black is my last choice as i feel it too visible for my needs. The breeding and health checks are paramount though. How easy are they to train? dead easy mate, its the owners that can be hard Take a choice 1. pay for training start to finish with a pro 2. buy a fully trained and finished dog 3. learn to do it yourself If you aint got much time to train consider if you have enough to keep? how many days do you actually shoot each year? Will it be a pet that can come shooting? or a regulary used tool? were will it be kept? I say this as you ask how long can they be left alone
