Cranfield
M Robson,s comment about pigeons on GM rape, made me wonder. Has anyone seen any reports or comments, on the possible effects of wildlife eating GM crops ? Are we going to get 6ft tall pigeons that fight back, Ninja rabbits, etc ?

Cranfield
It should be a concern, that sufficient research is carried out to ensure GM crops do not pose a threat to humans, animals and birds. The whole issue seems to come to the top of the Media Agenda about every 6 months and then dies away, for another 6 months. This could be another fine mess that President Tony gets us into. Teal
Heh, its been proven that DNA from GM crops can undergo horizontal transfer with cells in the gut, although in the testing none of these cells produced were harmful if produced on a mass scale (as all food is) some harmful mutations would have to happen. At the end of the day - why have GM food ? I'm a biologist and can see the need for research but when the world already produces 1 1/2 times the required amount of food to feed everyone there is no need -the EU even pays farmers to not produce (ie setaside).... I can see the need for research in Labs as it poses promise for the future of pharmacutical production, however while the tests are inconclusive its just plain fool hardy for the government to start planting it in the wild even on a small scale
