The Essex Hunter
With the weekend’s rabbit tally filling my freezers to over flowing, I called a local chap who used to ferret and pigeon shoot all around my way, however he is quite limited in getting about these days, so I asked him if he would like a few rabbits. So he popped around this afternoon and we got chatting, I knew he worked setting up egg incubators, this work also took him into the game keeping world. He saw my rotary and we were chatting about pigeon shooting. Then he said I met a very good pigeon shooter when I worked in Hampshire! He never used this sort of stuff; he used to chuck pigeons out of the hide! So I asked was this mans name Archie Coats? Yes he said…I met him quite a few times, he had a land rover and a Labrador, well spoken man…quite a gentle man…the land owners used to put bales of straw out for him and he would make hides out of them and he would shoot hundreds of pigeons. I have a video of him with that footballer chap Jack Charlton he said; it is at home some where…you can have it if you like…. This brightened up a some what dull Essex day TEH
Cranfield
That sounds like an interesting chap to have a chat with. I also have that video somewhere, its part of a set called "Jack's Game".
Mungler
TEH our shoot (Navestock) is in the process of looking into incubators and setting up etc for next year. I bought a 1000 or 2000 plus incubator off some bloke off the BBS about 2 years ago (I can't resist a bargain) and I understand it works but it's been stored in a barn and sat doing nothing. Have you or this bloke got any skills I can borrow / or swap / or get for beer?
Salopian
Many years ago whilst employed as an armourer/gunsmith for the forces. An officer turned up asking for 'Shotgun', the storekeeper in the R&I hadn't got a clue what this 'Rupert' wanted. " The chap who repairs shotguns and rifles". The Major was brought into the workshop to meet me. There began a good friendship, God how I miss the Major & John Ransford. But I now miss seeing the pigeons more.
