LED Torches

A friend and I go foxing regularly. We carry all the usual stuff Lightforce etc, my friend has an LED torch which almost good enough to see foxes at 100yds.

I've been researching these torches and whilst there are close to 5000 lumen torches available, the price is £100+.

So I wonder what lumen level would be needed to spot a fox clearly at say 150yds. Because there are variable power torches around, it could be used for 'normal' stuff as well.

I'm guessing its got to be CREE Led's and about 2000 lumens. Which is about £60+?

Has anyone any experience of these hand torches and what would you recommend - will give a review once bought and used in the field.

Thanks in advance.

I have an "UltraFire 1000 lumens CREE XM-L T6" LED torch that came from a nasty auction website for a rather reasonable £16.00 including postage, 2xbatteries a rather nasth holder and the torch. I have it mounted above the scope on my 1022 in a figure of 8 mount and I use it for lamping rabbits. You can pick them out about 100 yards away but the realistic range of the beam to illuminate a bunny properly is about 40 yards. Not amazing I know compared to proper lamping lamps but.. It weighs next to nothing and one battery lasts almost an hour.

I know you are after a bigger lamp with more range but perhaps this gives you an idea of how useful 1000 lumens is :good:

I have one of the Cree Torches that were on offer from LIDL's a few moths ago for £14.99 (I did a review on it somewhere on this forum) which had a variable focus and is more than capable of lighting up a fox out to 100 yards plus - The advertising says it has a beam that will go out to something like 229 yards but I find this questionable.

If you were to decide on one of these from LIDLs (Or similar from anywhere else) DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY by getting the cheap batteries that they sell for it - Those cheap batteries are total rubbish - I use Duracel Ultras in it and they last for ages, well worth paying the bit extra for!
