Alex C
Hi fellas, Mate of mine has a 51 plate Disco which was noted on his last MOT will need some welding on the chassis. Well on Sunday we got under it and had a look. We gave it a prod with a screw driver, then another and the more we poked at it the more holes we found. The bits directly under the front doors seems to be worse for some reason? Now to the question. Can i just clag a patch over the top of the hole or do i need it to sit flush with the rest of the chasis ? Do i need to weld the patch all round or can i get away with stitching it? Cheers
hodge911
you can just over patch but metal has to be of comparable thickness to original chassis and all plates "MUST BE FULLY SEAM WELDED" for mot your better off cutting rot out as if you dont the new metal rots quicker
wickedwickedmotox
The bits under the front doors are called out riggers and you can buy them complete just cut the old ones off the chassis and weld on the neqw ones easier than patchin by a long shot! Alex C
No, its not the outriggers unfortunately. These are the big bits that run front to back which are dropping to bits. I will fire up the electric tomohawk over the weekend i think. Cheers
Dr_evil
You mean the chassis rails or the crossmembers ?
gixer1
Probably find it has never been treated and the bits under the doors have seen a lot of debris over the last ten years. Regards, Gixer
Alex C
Chassis Rails.
Dr_evil
rails should be 3mm folded into a box then seam welded, I suggest using 3mm mild steel angle iron it's what I repaired my 109 with and use a mig…….an arc will bust straight through a bad chassis
Alex C
Thanks for the replies. We will be spending most of Sunday under it so should get it done in a day. I have a mig for tacking up then i will stick the rest if i can get away with it. Will make a change for me to get my hands dirty again, been a while. Will let you know how i get on but from what i have seen of it the best case would be it bursting into flames and he could then claim on the insurance ! Dr_evil
If you were nearer I'da offered to help you out Just remember remove or disconnect the battery and do not weld near the fuel or brake lines if not you go boom plus watch out for the electronics inside the chassis rails, try to weld those areas in stages to avoid melting them
Alex C
Thanks for the offer. Sure we will get it sorted in some sort of fashion cheers
