Reload
Hi all, I have an old Jonsered 630. It needed a new bar and chain, so they were bought and fitted today. I got an Oregan bar along with a multicut chain, as it will be cutting hard fruit trees. Anyway, after assembly and correct adjusment, I noticed that I couldn't pull the chain round the bar by hand as it seems to be too tight in the bar groove. I thought this might be the case with a new bar, and maybe it would be OK after it was run in by the motor. No such luck! It is like the chain brake is on, but it's been checked and all is fine there. Am I missing something? Or is it the wrong chain for the bar? That would be annoying as I bought them as a pair from the same company...
digit
Take the chain and bar off the saw and see if the chain runs freely in the bar, if it does put the chain around the drive sprocket to see if the drive links match up with the sprocket. gonk69
soak the bar and chain in good quality oil before assembly, matt
david hunter
also try the old chain on the new bar see if it runs free in the groove.
mike68
Make sure it is oiling ok. If you have mixed synthetic and regular oil it will be like a thick gloop in the oil tank and bung up the oiler.

mark@mbb
Put them together on a bench on top of the old ones and check they are the same size the chain will stretch over time so the old one should be a little bigger Mark
ROBLATCH
it sounds to me like the chain link is the wrong size for the drive sprocket.check the saw instructions and see what size drive the chain needs to be, my guess is an 8 but maybe wrong. Paul223
if you have the original bar it should have the size and number of links stamped into it's side ( eg 72 3/8 ) check the link size is the same for the new chain and bar, your new bar may be longer or shorter so the link number can change but the size needs to be the same does the new bar have a sprocket in the end, or is it the cheaper bull nose type? (not seen one in ages) if so the chain needs to be more slack to check the oiler run the saw with no bar and cover and watch the oil run from the oiling hole
Ratman2
Make sure you've not accidently activated the chain brake during assembly.
Reload
The chain does not run round the bar, it is well stiff. It fits in the groove in the bar but is tight. A mate of mine says it should run freely in the bar. I think they have supplied the wrong size chain... Thanks for all the comments.
jpbeaver
Jonsereds like most saws have a drive link width of 1.3 for the smaller saws and 1.5 for the bigger saws. Stihl have 1.3 and for some reason 1.6. It sounds like you have got a chain for a still rather than jonsered.
Reload
Cheers JP, that would figure. I'll be ringing them in the next few days to get this sorted. I have a lot of wood that needs cutting...
