kent
Thought it took you a long time to respond, a DSC shows you can shoot 4", which, by your own admission/knowledge (and mine) proves NOTHING, I know excellent shooters on the range at vast distances, that shot after shot miss bunnies at 50 yards! I am not disputing the fact that generally bigger calibres (the right ammo) has more stopping power, what I can't get my head round is the fact that we apparently legislate for incompetence by insisting on larger calibres that necessary! And there are PLENTY of instances of wounding deer with BIGGER calibres as well! We could go on and on, yes we legislate for the less competant- its the same on the road regards drivers but we must all comply non the less, who is to say who is cometant anyway- END OF

That's what the Deer Act does! Yes, we all know a .22lr will probably stop a deer if you are a VERY good shot, but seeing as your not, have a .243, or bigger.... njc110381
What I would like to see is a more open system for firearms in general. For newbies the land, calibre and quarry conditions are fine and for shotgun owners just a SGC could stay as is but once proven it would be nice to "graduate" to a single free certificate? A system of any calibre under a set maximum and a limit on the number of guns owned would be great. So as an example for me I could have up to nine firearms/shotguns (my cabinet capacity) under .338 Win Mag to shoot whatever I deem fit? That wouldn't much change what I do, but it would reduce the workload of the police by a great amount. Just the one certificate for any shotgun or rifle - how simple and sensible would that be?! I've got to the point now where I feel I have proven myself to be ok with the .338 - I've got it on an open ticket after all. So if I do choose to change my 7-08 for a 6.5x55 why do I have to ask them and give them a load of fee free work to do? Surely the RFD reading on my ticket that I'd sold the 7-08 could be enough for him to then sell me a 6.5x55? If I ask they just say yes - there's nothing to argue about unless I want to up my number of guns or get a bigger calibre!
