Kes
I am about to put in for the above variation as the land is cleared for .243 and although using a .223 for foxes only, I am getting a degree of inaccuracy due to variation in wind speeds and I would like the heavier round to 'smooth' some of these effects. What would your view be as if you were an FEO? Is this sufficient justification ? P.s I have had an open cert for 4-5 years and have .22 lr and .223 on cert. Barely use the .22lr as I find it ricochets a lot and may well replace this with a .17hmr at renewal time.
Luckyshot
If your 223 is for fox and you want 243 for fox without deer I would think your chances would be slim. Why not apply for deer/fox on 243 instead.
andythechicken
I'm contemplating putting in a variation as well. FAC .22 Air to 6.5x55 for Fallow and Roe deer. Already have FAC for .22LR and .20BR. I am doing my DSC1 in April and if I have permission for land with Deer on I can't see that they could object? Kes if you come under cheshire they will prob say NO..i tried a few yrs back about 3..had FAC 15yrs + now if i wanted 243 i had show proof of land i shoot with deer and they would also put the MENTOR condition on. And i asked BASC for help...that was a laugh. But good luck and keep us posted. Mick

Mick hi, I have heard they are undergoing a series of changes and maybe it would be worth trying again ? this is the reason I'm trying now. Will keep all informed of success or Cheers
deershooter
I dont understand this I have had a .223 for foxing for 17 years, wind speed has never caused me a problem. The only thing I can think is that you are taking shots at too long range. I suggest that you improve your field craft and calling techniques, because if you keep shooting at foxes and miss them they will get lamp shy and then when you turn up the foxes will move to the next county Keep shooting below 150 yards you will not have a problem with wind. Sorry if this seems negative but this is probably the view of the FEO as well Deershooter
CharlieT
I don't see why you should have any problem, even the ACPO guidelines recognise and advocate the use of .243 & 6.5 in such situations. Of course if you really improved your fieldcraft you could call them in close enough to bang them on the head with hammer !!.

Cheshire are one of the worse counties and ref ACPO they dont even follow it..they make there own guidelines along the way...ive had BASC who did nothing and NGO who were on the case over a yr..i still got no where with what i wanted. Police do not have to adopt these guidelines and more often than not they dont. BASC WILL NOT do anything about it (certainly in a few problems I have had in the past) as guidelines are just that. They are not rules set in stone they are just there to guide the police if they so require.
