Why dose the cold weather keep birds from wondering?

Most birds are released in pens in the woods , the woods offer warmth food and water

when the winters are warm they start finding the odd berry her and there then end up following hedgerows away from the pens before they no it there miles away from where they are wanted (hence the dogging in )

Cold weather birds stay in the warmth of the wood :good:

Pretty much bang on! I know a keeper that still hand feeds and calls! Fantastic to watch!

On our shoot on a mild winter there is so many insects to feed on the bracken that the birds start to wander out of the main shoot. When we have a cold winter the birds have to stay around the feeders on the main drives. It was no coincidence that in this very mild winter we had our worst return in years.

We chiefly keep warm by wearing clothing. Animals and birds chiefly keep warm by digesting food. If it is cold a game bird needs to feed to keep up its body temperature up, it also cannot afford to waste energy by moving around without a good reason. So it finds a sheltered spot out of the worst of the weather and with a good food supply and hunkers down.
