hi all ,

i am after some advice,,i have been brought up on s x s for over 35 years rough shooting and have lately taken up shooting clays,,i was advised i should or would be better using an o+u ,, i tried a silver pigeon out and did ok but cos i,m used to a slim forend on the sxs i found it hard to get used to the chuncky forend on the o+u . would it be advisable to get used to the o+u because i am seriously thinking about entering a few comps at our local club (next year) :hmm: or should i just stick to using the sxs,,,, any ideas ????

Plenty of folk use sporter o/u's on game shoots too, it works both ways.

I know a fella who shoots a 20g sxs game gun with 3/4 and full choke, and he will consistently kill far more clay than I can with my 12g sporter :good:

funny thing is i,m holding my own against them but i think thats down to confidence with my gun :hmm:

just stick with the sxs.

might get warm, but just shoot.

i stopped listening to what people advised me to get / buy /whatever with my money. i just did what i wanted.

i bought a pumpaction, one of my associates was bad mouthing it before i`d even tried it. when you start putting scores in the middle of the pack with a pump action, it really makes them think...

I did the same. Was hitting 60-70% with it consistantly. Nothing wrong with them.

If you are only shooting afew rounds of sporting then i don't think that the differance would be appreciable to you but I don't think my body would have allowed me to put between 300 to 500 cartridges a day on quite a regular basis for long with a S/S. The heavier the gun the more recoil will be absorbed. A S/S is perfect for walk up or game shooting but I will stick with my 8lber for clays. from Auntie.

auntie,

i`m a big sxs fan and i love shooting anything with them. but one thing i and another user have come to like, homeload cartridges.

i can load a very soft cartridge hard hitting or very soft hitting, just by using alittle common sense. my preference is for 1,1/8 oz of number 4 subsonic. usualy can take anything and have the range / pattern for it too. at 1000fps its not fast, but most clays and game rarely travel faster. handloading these makes me want to use the sxs more and more.

they were originally designed for upto 1200fps of 1,1/8oz, with upto 3 drams of black powder. i just save 200fps. the speeds quoted on boxes arnt gospel truth. but they are calculated from 2.5M chrono result and backtracked.

what ever you intend to shoot with the sxs, just have it hover around 1000fps,for low recoil. 1200fps max. for normal 1200fps and 1100 as a compromise, slow loads 1oz and less will be awsome, no recoil and fun.

they pattern so well, you wont be messing around with chokes.

I understand where you are coming from but i still maintain if you are putting a fair number of cartridges through your gun then i think i would stick with the O/U. Also it is possible that alot of the clay grounds would not like you to use home loads and indeed I believe you would not be able to use them in competition. Each to his own. from Auntie. :good:

Hi, I'm a sxs man through and through, love them! At the end of last summer I got a 30" Beretta sporter as I wanted to try a bit more Clay shooting with a few lads off here. After my 25" sxs it felt so different and hits dropped like a stone, so slow to get moving. I have stuck with it though and I can now see why they are so popular with the clay busters, horses for courses. Never worry about what others think, get out there and enjoy shooting :good:

If you're happy using it then stick with it. Shoot what you enjoy and what works best for you, just because everyone else uses an O/U doesn't make it better.

They break the clays just as well as anything else, the only downside is they do get a bit warmer if you shoot lots rapidly, but that's never bothered me.

Extra recoil? I've never noticed it, if it's not causing you any bother then don't think about it.

i heard that you are not allowed to use homeloaded carts for competition. but 99.9999% of what i shoot is just haybayler shoots. not many home load. it would be hard pressed to prove that the loads i shoot are actually homeloads. they look that good. i can even finish them with a rto to round and taper the crimp crown.

i just like slower ammo.

i`ve been accused of using magnum ammo before now, but that was factory shells bought at the club!
