Dunkield
My eBay account was compromised earlier this week, as was my personal email account, luckily all is well but it could have been a lot worse. The person that did just wanted to punt some, presumably stolen, kit through an existing account with history and 100% feedback. eBay spotted it and pulled the listings, but as they had control over my account and the email address registered to that account I was just a helpless observer for a few days which was bit worrying. This was all the result of an obvious phishing mail I received, but I wanted to look at the person who sent me the mails' details. I didn't know it at the time but their account had been hijacked. When I clicked on their name, I was presented with the normal log on screen for eBay but it was an exact copy, which was in fact a script to grab my password (the only difference, if I had looked up was subtle difference in the URL) From there they got into my email account changed my password and also my postcode, so I couldn't change my password as your postcode is part of the verification process so pretty clever really. It was only after I spoke to someone at Yahoo on the phone that it all became clear and I was able to talk to eBay from my Yahoo email address that we started to make some progress. So there you have it, QED, I have had phishing mails before, normally after buying something quite expensive, and forwarded them onto eBay but you just get an automated reply telling you they are known scams and how to avoid them, but it is easily done - so learn from my experience and be careful out there! darebear
damn. and who checks URL's? lets be honest. i've had my ebay account broken into, and ebay suspended it whilst they sorted out the problem. i wasn't even aware of it until ebay alerted me to the fact. i thankfully didnt have any come back because of it, but its still a concern. the utter *******'s. Actually I do, consistently. You can never be too careful, so I always check the url before and after I click.
