hoggysreels
Well the subject of steel shot must have had the posterior hoofed out of it numerous times, but I'm very new to shooting and on a vertical learning rise, so here goes !! I've an older type 12 bore O/U Shotgun that is proofed for nitro use, according to a good friend of mines in the know, but it's NOT proofed for steel shot usage ... :- My query is! 1/ ... Apart from Lead shot and Steel shot is there a third alternative (a form of an Alloy Shot etc ?)... I understand that Steel is an "Alloy" ... but I'm basically referring to an .. "alternative form of Alloy" .. that's maybe, an alternative to what is broadly referred to, by cartridge manufacturers as "Steel" ... (I hope you get my drift gentlemen?) 2/ ... Is there a "Steel Shot" that can be used in a non-proofed Shotgun ... (I maybe getting confused) ... but is there a Steel Shot cartridge that is encased in a form of plastic that protects a "non Steel proofed Barrel" from damage when using Steel Shot ... Sorry for the simplicity of the questions but as aforementioned its a beginners outlook I have and that's why my questions tend to reflect it ... cheers chaps ... hoggysreels Edited March 15, 2012 by hoggysreels

hoggysreels
Cheers Ratty This goes some way to answering my doubt/questions .... The critical rule is that Standard Steel cartridges can be fired through any gunproved to the standard level (ie most “Nitro” proved guns, proved to at least 930 bar) but High Performance Steel should be fired only through guns that have passed Steel Shot proof. These guns should be proved to at least 1320 bar, be stamped with "Steel Shot" and a have a Fleur de Lys proof mark to prove it).

mpk
To answer your question about alternatives you also have the option of bismuth, itm and tmx to name a few. Unfortunatley these shot types are expensive and seem to be rising. I have some bismuth homeloads that i used at the front end of the season that worked very well. I also have some itm (gamebore) but cannot comment as i havent tryed them yet edit: cack spelling Edited March 15, 2012 by mpk
