Broadcasting mustard into standing crop

Recommended Posts

I've got an area on my shoot that would be perfect for a strip of cover but it currently has rape in. I'm sure the farmer would let me put a cover crop in next year but would like to try something for the coming season.

Would I be able to boadcast mustard into rape a week or two before harvest? Has anyone ever done this and was it a success??

I think it would be difficult to actually broadcast into standing rape as it will be at least 5' high and too thick to walk through. Rape is usually cut a week or two before the wheat anyway, so you should have time to sow the mustard when the rape has gone, but you may have to cultivate the ground a bit.

the only issue you will have is the volunteer rape that will grow in it but as said broadcast straight after its harvested and you should get a decent cover. On wheat ground ours always does really well makes for a cheap cover on any ground thats going to be left as stubble for the following years spring drillings
