Blythe gun dog club

I was thinking of going along tonight to see if I can find it and pick up a few training / conditioning tips for the pup and I just wondered what its like. I didn't want to turn up and it be a full on serious field trial training club and be sneered at for having a "house dog".

Well I'm sat in the cricket pitch carpark next to the field where the training takes place at Blyth (without an E) but there's not a lot happening other than a bit of a fire in the field. There's 2 lads sat on a bench at the pavillion who confirmed this is where it happens so I'll sit it out for half an hour or so.

I t isn't on the cricket pitch it's on the field next to it or just down the road a little on the way to oldcoates before the humpback bridge there's a turning on the left. Drive down that lane about two hundred yards and it's sometimes held on a field on the left

Well nobody turned up but as I was leaving I saw a lady with a Springer and a Sprocker so I stopped to ask her if she was there for the dog training. She wasn't, it looks like they start up again after the clocks went forward but I think I was a week os so early (I know the clocks changed last week) but she told me about their club that meet in the same place on Sunday mornings. They do training for Spaniels and retrievers, it's quite informal and loads attend (can be upto 50 dogs on the field some weeks) so I'm taking them along today. I've had them out for an hour this morning with the hope of running off that first burst of energy. I think it's £3.50 and runs from about 10 through to 12.

I'll let you know how we get on.

Well we went today and took both dogs. we got there just after 10 and there was a good mix of dogs there, the usual gun dogs (Springers, Cockers and Labs) and the not so usual Staffie. About 30 dogs and owners in total.

We started by lining up in two lines facing each other and took turns weaving our dogs between the others while not letting them sniff or pull towards the others. Then walking forward thro the other line of dogs so we were passing thro the oposing like. After a few minutes of this we did some sitting and staying and then some retrieving. A dummy was thrown, we had our dogs mark them and a dog was chosen to fetch it. It seemed to be the same few getting chosen to do this and my older Springer was itching to go.

The highlight of the day was a lab being sent out to retrieve a dead pigeon and not returning until he had eaten it no matter how many sticks were thrown at him or dummies were thrown to distract him. I heard he did the very same thing last week. There was talk of next weeks pigeon having a bottle of Tabasco emptied into it.

All in all it was a good morning, nothing too OTT, quite basic, good fun and neither of my dogs showed me up. If they progress there's mid week classes that are more specific and targeted to dog types (retrievers / Spaniels).

I'll be going next week, if any of you guys go, come and say hi. I'm the one with 2 Springers (mum and 4 month old pup) I'll be driving a blue Discovery 2 providing I'll be able to get diesel but thats another story.

Hi, I would be very interested in attending this as i have a 6 month old cocker and it would be ideal to get him socialised and trained at the same time, how often do they meet, and is it expensive.

Andy

Hey Andy,

They meet every Sunday morning, about 10 for a couple of hours. It cost £3.50 and seems ideal for what you're wanting as I said before it's not too full on. This Sunday (easter Sunday) they're having an easter egg hunt for the dogs and a bit of a fuddle too.

If you have time come along, its almost on your door step.

Nice to meet you all this morning Scot,

A good mix of dogs and owners and abilities, nothing too serious but just what me and Jd need to get us on the right track, I will definately keep on going to help him with his training and especially to socialise him with lots of other dogs, after his initial excitement at seeing so many dogs in one place he settled down to really enjoy it, eventually starting to do what was required of him about halfway through the session.

Thanks for the heads up on this one.

Nice to meet you too Andy, and thanks for not diving straight in and taking the **** out of me for having the only dog that was straining at the lead to retrieve every dummy thrown except the one she should have.

As for the black lab with the appitite for raw dead birds they tried him with a frozen chicken just after you left (in feather, not an oven ready jobbie) and he brought that one back rather than trying to chomp his wat through it so no need for the Tabsco. :good:

hope to see you there next week.

Great looking dog by the way.

I must admit Jd was going nuts trying to get to those dummies, he was on his back legs for the 1st few, then decided to sit and stay as requested, just whining at them as we have one hear and he loves retrieving-finding them.

Must admit i took him out today and practised what we did yesterday and the improvement is awesome, he now sits on command too hand+whistle signals, even managed to get him sat for more than 4 mins, he met some more dogs today while down the lane and was well behaved, so i will definately keep going.

Next time i will take his 2 dummies and let him have a good run round when every one else's dog is having a go.

Don't what it is about this dog but every body loves him, our next door neighbour is telling me that she is going to steal him, trouble is she means it!!!!, she doesn't like the fact he is kept in a large dog run, i have tried explaining that he is a working dog but she is adamant that he should be out, they are moving soon so i am having to keep an extra eye on him during the day, and bringing him in at night.

See you next time (work permitting)

Take care.

Andy

Hey Andy, We'll be there tomorrow and if you are genuineley worried about your neighbour the pup can always come to Worksop for a holiday while they move. He'll have to stay in the house with my two tho' and probably get spoilt rotten by the Mrs.

Keep up the work with him, he already puts my 2 to shame.

  • 1 month later...

I'm interested to check this out. But the directions are a little confusing. Can anyone help me please?

I have a working strain cocker spaniel. She's 7 yrs old with very little in proper training. But it's something I'd like to get into.

Also is this session the same as the other one run, Wed & Sun ?

I've not been able to attend the last couple of weeks due to other commitments but can recommend it.

As for directions its really easy to find.

If you're in Blyth take the Sheffield road past the cricket pitch and turn into the field on your right. (keep your eye open for cars parked in the field from just before 10am (Sundays).

I've not been on a Wednesday yet but they start at 7pm.
