AT 53 yrs and on the bucket list, and having been a shotgun cert holder since 17 :o is a desire to have a 17hmr and 22 rimfire, possible FAC Air as an addition to the vermin armoury.

I have 3 farms cleared for all these calibres. My shotgun cert is due for renewal in oct of this year.

My questions are:

Due I apply for a coterminious certificate now in the hope all is granted and superceeds the renewal in oct?

Is the mentoring thing only for deer management or does it apply to other calibres?

Is there a possibility I would be granted an open certificate for these smaller calbres?

Do you have to specify the make and model of the intended rifles or is it calibre specific only?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, in West Mercia things are so slow that 10-12 months is the norm with fac so the sooner the better. For rimfire I don't know anyone that has had to have mentoring. Open cert is not normal first time, some will have had it though I'm sure. No need to state make/model just cals and mods required.

Good luck and get the ball rolling :good:

Chances of getting an open certificate on first application is very very slim although it happens.

You have to have firearms experience and mentoring only comes in normally when you apply for a CF.

Put in for it now as a co-terminious ticket

For my application I just put bolt action 22rimfire and bolt action 223 centrefire

Yes.

Yes, (more specifically, centrefire), you'll almost certainly be OK unless you're in a right miserable constabulary area.

Be prepared initially to accept the three farms that you mention but you may get lucky.

No, calibre only, but don't forget the moderators if applicable which it probably is.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help :good:

Forgot to ask also, in the section regarding maximum ammunition held and maximum purchased at one time, what would you suggest is an acceptable quantity in either case?

Thanks.

Copious! On cost grounds.

Buy 500, keep 1000 of each. You should get these quantities as you're only talking rimfire.

The HO guidance says that cost is not an aceptable reason for backing up a quantity of ammunition request. I have no idea why as I fail to see how it affects public safety! It does say that you can use the reason that you want to buy a lot from the same batch if your particular rifle likes it.

Mad train of thought but this is the government whio dreams up this rubbish.

The police firearms guidance suggests 500/600 for rimfire and 200/250 for centrefire. I missread and asked for 200/300 for all centrefire calibres and was granted. I started with 500/600 on the rimfires but they upped my .22RF to 1000/1200 after a year and getting through 3000+ rounds.

That was a good (easily defensible) place to start.
