Rearing Birds

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone wanted few pointers on Rearing Pheasants. We took on new shore last year belonging to a very large farm. The chap that owns the farm asked me last night did I want to take on the shooting of his land which is roughly about 300 Acres of crops grazing and planted woods. We have six Guns and one of them Rears Turkeys, and were thinking about useing is Faciliteys to Rear Pheasants for this land. Problem is none of us bar The Turkey farmer have ever done anything like this before. So I Guess we need to know (A) How many to we need to be looking at. (B) how exactly we go about this meaning how old do the birds be when we buy them and how close is it to rearing Turkeys,,and things like how old do they be when released, just as much info as possible. And © Price what do you reckon we should have to pay for decent birds... Any and as much help as possible please would be great. Thank for now folks... MARTY ...

the turkey farmer will have everything to rear them as we used to have a very similar arrangement. You basically buy day olds and then rear them till they are ready to go out, our only issue was an overlap between when they were ready and when the turkey farmer needed the buildings for his turkeys. It meant either we had the birds too early bearing in mind we are an arable area we like to put them out at a point where they don't mostly end up in the combine. In the end the cost saving versus poults wasn't really worth it.

Think you will be better off buying in poults at 7/8 weeks old.. Number of birds to put down depends on how big your release pen is,and how big is it, if you have 1in the wood. How many days are you intending to shoot, and are these going to be a walked up rough shoot with lowish numbers expected to be shot (30-50) or bigger driven days 100+. For a price on poults you shouldnt be far off from £3.60 per poult ..

More info you can put down the more people can better advise.. May be better putting this posting in the gamekeeping section if you can get mods to move it for you..
