Drayman
Anyone know if the mackerel are close in around the Shoreham or local areas? We had loads off the boat from Littlehampton but I want to do some evening runs to the coast for a bit of beach fishing. Cheers, Chris
ack-ack
They showed in numbers from the south kent beaches briefly last week. Conditions were perfect when I went but I failed to make contact. I was trying every trick in the book but they simply were not there. I'm looking forward to a bit of sport on the 2lb TC one evening after work. Its in the boot ready to go, all I need is the tip off and I'll be all over them like a bad rash.
FalconFN
I've had several smallish ones off Seaford in the last couple of weeks. Incidentally one was full, and I mean full, of worms - not nice.
ack-ack
I've had several smallish ones off Seaford in the last couple of weeks. Incidentally one was full, and I mean full, of worms - not nice. There's an increased incidence of this, I've been noticing a definite trend over the past 5 or so seasons. Any Marine biologists on here that could explain why? As there are less fish about I expected them to be getting more vigourous and heavier through lack of competition but this isn't happening. My Average size has also been steadily dropping off. Drayman
All but one of the mackerel on the boat last week were quite small - nothing like the size they used to be - we put it down to early season fish but I'll watch to see if size improves. Haven't noticed the worm problem but I'll look more carefully now. Did a search on fish worms and it seems everything suffers from them to some degree. Been eating fish forever and never noticed a problem but I suppose, like all wild animals, they'll have their share of parasites.
shotgun sam
Does anyone know whether they are in the Fife area yet going there in a few weeks Sam
Catweazle
They were at Aberporth, South Wales, on Monday, but mostly quite small and a fair way out from the rocks. They were eating sandeels and taking hokkais. Distance casting was required at midday, they moved a bit closer in early evening.
Catweazle
As an aside, did you know that cutting off the head and tail and rinsing a Mackerel in water as soon as you catch it makes it stay fresh for much longer ? I only learned that this week, getting as much blood as possible out straight away is the key.

We had loads off the boat from Littlehampton but I want to do some evening runs to the coast for a bit of beach fishing. Cheers, Chris They were around still last week. I caned three dozen off the beach at Southwick in under an hour for the bait freezer. They were chasing fry along the groynes, but with the weather we're having at the moment you'll have no chance. Have a look at WSF forum , particularly the South Coast catch reports, it'll soon be on there if they reappear...just be aware that as with most forums there are the trolls who love to jump on a newbie asking a silly question as they see it!!! 'Search' is your friend.
