casts_by_fly
Hi All, I've used my SAK on my 17 hornet to good effect, but not for a large amount of shooting. I suspect it would be good for quite a bit more and it is probably cheaper to just replace a SAK if I burn this one out, however I don't want to take the chance that it blows out as I'll be shooting from a vehicle now. So what I'm looking for is a small centerfire moderator that is about the same size and weight (smaller, in particular shorter, would be better) suitable for a 17 hornet. It is going on a very lightweight gun, so a T8 wouldn't be the one. I did some looking a couple years back when I first got this gun but decided that the SAK was my best bet for what I needed then. I seem to remember the CQB and a wildcat CUB as possibilities then. Anyone tried the PES 17 muzzle can? It looks about the size/weight of a SAK and around £125 or so (plus I can get it from Steve down the road). Any others I should consider? Is the DM80 hornet rated? Thanks, Rick
tweedledee
what are your thoughts on the 17 hornet?? dm80 can make a can specific to the calibre
Hornet 6
I use a Pess Min-T in (not Mini-Target) .22 for my Hornet, best mod I have tried. I tried every Pess mod JMS had in stock, this was the quietest by a margin, and the weight is ok as well. Neil.
casts_by_fly
what are your thoughts on the 17 hornet?? dm80 can make a can specific to the calibre It is a good round if it is the round you need. For long range rabbits (also birds, hares, etc) and not bulk rabbits it makes a lot of sense. For 200 yards it is point and click with more than enough juice to get the job done. I wouldn't hesitate on a 200 yard broadside fox. That said, you need to reload and reloading 17's has some additional considerations, some little and some not so little. It is one of the most fun little cartridges I've ever shot though. Mine is in an encore with a short a pencil thin barrel. I like it for carrying and walking the fields (it replaced a HMR with similar handling). I'd love to see what a 'bench' version would be like with a varmint contour barrel. Mine has no recoil as it is (just a bit of noise), so a 10 lb gun on bags wouldn't even move. Thanks, Rick
casts_by_fly
thanks neil, The mini T could do as well. It is 1" longer than the muzzle can, but nearly 3" less past the end of the barrel. Same diameter, just a little big heavier (but the weight is further back). This one makes the short list. Thanks Rick
tweedledee
tc encore? what you think of it?
casts_by_fly
yes, encore. I've had my encore since before I moved over here (5 years) and started with a 223 (which I still have). I added the 17 hornet ~3 years ago. The encore has some quirks and is slightly different to a bolt gun, but at the end of the day a good barrel with a good load and a half decent shooter is what is important. I've got 2 of those 3. One nice thing with the encore is the lack of a receiver. A bolt gun has 4" tied up in the receiver (or more). Add a 4" receiver to a 20" barrel and then 3" of moderator off the end and you're looking at a long setup. Then again, shooting an encore prone on a bipod means a bit of movement to reload unlike a bolt which is a flick of the wrist. thanks, rick
njc110381
The chap who is building my .17 Hornet makes titanium mods. He does one that's a little larger than a Parker Hale rimfire mod but it's over barrel (so only good for sporters) and costs £200ish. Would that be something you may be interested in? I put one on my Hornet just to get a feel for the weight and I honestly could barely tell it was there!
casts_by_fly
Interesting, but a bit expensive for what I was thinking. I was hoping to be in the £100-£130 bracket. Thanks Rick

Thanks Rick The smallest Pess at just under £150 is a good bet, when I tried them all it was a toss up between the .17 Muzzle Can 22 WM ST and the Mini-T, the Mini-T was more expensive but there was little differnece in sound, all that tipped me was the Mini-T could be used on the .223 I had at the time as well.
