I walk my local Washes most weeks as they`re on my doorstep.....The amount of young broods is very encouraging. Despite the really wet weather the young seem to be thriving, which is good news for me and the rest of the lads in the local club. :good:

Its good that you are seeing some young duck. Here in Norfolk wild mallard are almost having a complete faliure so far and most females are now sitting on second clutches. In one marsh where I do a brood count so far only three mallard broods have been found older than 2 weeks. Broods of 1.2 and 3. A few morebroods on the village ponds where the duckli9ngs are fed , but still pretty poor. So far only one gadwall brood of 2 and both the shovellers broods I know of have been lost.

last year there were over 30 broods on the marsh with an average size of 3.7.

Yes mate, I suppose we are lucky compared to what you`ve just said!!. Must admit thats not very good. Obviously there have been certain seasons here on the Nene washes where the young broods didn`t make it and wild mallard have been a rare sight. Sport really not picking up until the widgeon arrive. We used to rear 3 or 4 hundred mallard a few years ago releasing them on our local wash. Obviously a good percentage didn`t stay but it was still rewarding all the same. Having a good relatonship with Charlie our RSPB warden has always been good. Hopefully the club will consider doing the same sometime in the future.
