Well,

Took the day off work ready for my FAC interview at 11.30am this morning.

No sign of the FEO at 12.30 so I rang Gwent Firearms department to find out where he was and if he was running late could he call later as I had an appointment to go to at 1.30. They advised that they did try to call me this morning (didnt get a call/message) to say that he has phoned in sick and they cant schedule another appointment until the 20th August.

GUTTED! :/

On a plus note, whilst on the phone I asked them to check what calibre one of my permissions was cleared for and turns out its cleared for upto 22-250 and dosent need to be rechecked until 2017. :good:

Oh well, **** happens and people get ill I suppose.

Spoke to Gwent Police today and told them I cant make the appointment on the 20th as ive been asked to attend a 4 day driving course with South Wales Police........''No problem, how about the 16th?'' the nice lady said.

Needless to say, I bit their arm off. 4 days sooner at a time that suits me better. :good:

  • 2 weeks later...

Update,

Was supposed to have my interview at 11am this morning and with no sign of the FEO at 12.15 I called the firearms office to see if there was a delay as I knew the appointment before mine was a fair distance away.

.....only to be told that he had just left his 11am appointment!

Turns out that they had mixed up the appointments in the office and he had gone to a different applicant in the area who happens to have the same first initial and surname as myself, GUTTED!

Needless to say Im not very happy as this is the second time I have had to take a day off work for the interview (the money I have lost would have bought me my 22lr!)

Fingers crossed they can keep the next appointment with a different FEO.

Thats pretty shocking. Might be worth asking if he could come out one "evening" The driving course sounds interesting!

Tried asking for a late slot but the latest they offer is 1430 and I work 0800 to 1740 :|

So hopefully the 0700 slot will be ok, altho I did tell them that I have to be out of the house at 0745 at the latest. They said that would be fine as its only an appointment to check the security etc for my SGC renewal........ah, no its not I said, its for my FAC application. :ermm:

Yeah the driving course should be fun

Well, had my interview today. FEO arrived early and appologised for the mix ups that had occured. Nice chap too.

He advised me that they would not grant me a cf on first application (which is fair enough) but he wouldn't have a problem with 17hmr for fox (I know this is a contentious subject with some).

The FEO asked why did I want a FAC air, 22lr and 17hmr. I advised the reasons for requesting each calibre,

22lr for a noise sensitive permission with shorter ranges where there is a lot of horses and police dog kennels therefore minimal disturbance with subs.

17hmr for the other 3 permissions which are adjoining and are more or less open fields where noise is less of an issue but range would be needed.

Fac air was applied for because I have a HW80 in the safe which could be upgraded if needed.

I was told that he would put forward a recommendation for the 22lr and the 17hmr (ommiting FAC air as it does the same as 22lr) which I was happy with. I argued the case of the cf as I have 3 permissions with fox problems and he said to use the hmr.

I went to work and received a call from the FEO a few hours later stating that the Chief Constable was not happy in granting me the 22lr AND a 17hmr, and that she would only allow me 1 or the other as I am a new shooter. He said that I should just be happy with the one rimfire (22lr), be patient, and then ask for the cf in a year once I have been able to get some mentoring/range time. Not really a problem but one of the main reason is that I need something that was capable of the odd fox (and 22lr only would not be the best for this in my opinion.)

I asked could I have the 17hmr for the distance/fox and if they were not prepared to issue a 22lr for the permission I needed it on, then could they at least allow me a FAC air aswell?

Gutted as I wanted/needed the 22lr AND the 17hmr and thought that they would have been ok on a first application as I have genuine reasons for owning both calibres.

What is your take on it guys?

Speak to BASC.

They are really overdoing it, only allowing you a .22lr. If your safe to shoot that, your safe to shoot a .17HMR, FAC air, and a center-fire of any size.

If you want it, argue that the FAC air is for times when you need low noise, but the .22lr would be unsafe (ricochet concerns). Also, on large enough land, it can sometimes be used to shoot into trees, unlike a .22. Not granting you both because they do the same job is stupid, they're different.

I'd dig my heels in on this, having everything you've asked for is not unreasonable, provided you've 'good reason' (as you clearly have), you should get it all, which is why I suggest you get BASC to try to have a word with them. If you can get a FAC holder to write to the police saying that you've safely used a center-fire under their supervision, that would be a great help and remove their safety 'concerns'.

I would not accept a .17HMR for foxes. Yes it does kill them, but the range is limited, and if your wanting to do more than pop off the odd one while out after bunnies, you need something bigger. I wouldn't roll over and take this.

Would getting BASC involved **** the feo/police off and hinder my chances of getting anything?

If it did that would be very unprofessional of them....you can decide not to rock the boat and accept the decision or you can challenge it. Everyone who accepts the limitations which are illogical and unfounded makes it harder for those who follow.....
