UKJay
Anyone used this kit? Have it on order to refinish my Beretta stock at the end of the season and was looking at researching methods of use etc. Am ******** if I'm paying £18 for the DVD though! Looks like a simple strip down with fine grade wire wool before sealing the grain, applying stain and then oil and lacquer finish - that right? Any pitfalls I should be aware of? I know not to rush it and that it will take a week or more for the layes - any other comments? Thanks in advance Edited August 9, 2012 by UKJay
ozzy518
I'd love to do the stock on my Sil Pig 3. Trouble is I'd end up buying all the kit and then make a complete dogs bottom ring of the job. Then have to pay someone to sort out my bodge job and get it done properly. I'd be sending mine to Straightshooter1 off here . Deffo knows his stuff. In fact as soon as I can get wifey to let me have some money that's what I'm doing. UKJay
Thanks - but I already have the kit and it is a winter project for me. Am happy with the process but just looking for any obvious things to beware of.
arjimlad
I like the kit. I have used it twice. The finishing oil has alkanet in it & gives a nice darkening oil finish. I would recommend you stain the stock down to whatever shade you like though first. Make sure you give it a very good rubbing down with the wire wool after stripping the original finish, because if you don't get down to new wood, the finish just sits on top of the old remains. P~MX
check out the vids on youtube for hints and tips on how to do your stock up, you need a can of Nitromos to remove all the old varnish and colour before you use your kit but If you take your time and have patience it's doable - good luck
PAV331
I have only used the oil before. You need to make sure you give it a really good shake and that it isn't cold before you use it. Less is defo more, just put your finger over the end of the bottle, tip it up, and what you get on your finger is pretty much enough to do the whole stock. Just use the warmth from your fingers to work it in. I was advised not to put any on the chequering, but if your stripping all the old stuff of you may need to. Leave it in a warm place to to dry for at least a day before adding another coat. I can't stress enough though, don't get carried away and put more than just the smallest of amounts on, it will just stay sticky and you'll have to try rub it all off and start again. Oh and it smells lush.
