When do the Continental pigeon arrive with you?

Normally they seem to arrive here (West Wales) around about the 3rd week in October. They always seem to time their arrival with the fall of acorns.Three weeks and they have mopped up all the windfall acorns. Then they are gone.

I seem to remember TEAL posting about them landing in NI and just standing on the field exhausted. Tried a search but cant find it. Any of the older members remember the post?

I can remember that post post and perhaps Teal can comment again.

When I lived in North Kent, the arrival of the Continental pigeons was more noticeable, than it is in the South of the county.

Large groups usually started to arrive in mid October, depending upon the weather.

It was thought that these birds came from the Scandinavian countries, rather than the near Continent.

They appeared to land mainly in Essex and then move over the Thames to North Kent.

I think that birds that do land on the South part of Kent, probably move inland quickly, which is why I don't notice a build up in local numbers.
