Snotty
Something came in to our garden and finished off our last 2 chickens, foxes had the rest but couldn't get the Barbu d'Uccles on account of they are small and can fly. The wife caught a glimpse of it when the aviary went beserk, some bird of prey she said, clutching at the wire. Yesterday a fat green budgie got dragged out through the bars, 1" welded mesh, and got munched on the lawn. She's tied half inch mesh over the wire near the perches but if it gets one of her darling cockatiels I will have to deter it, even if it's a golden eagle it gets frightened off or my life won't be worth living What on earth could it be? She said it had a light brown derriere when she saw it fly off, apparently it was devilish quick. We are making arrangements to empty the aviary but it will take a few days to move everyone. best regards Snotty

henry d
buzzard? He said devilish quick I would advise a non-lethal alternative, get a bathroom sized mirror(or several) and place them on the mesh facing outwards. When, what I suspect is a sparrowhawk, comes in for the kill it catches a glimpse of "another"raptor and should get it to pull up. A few long lengths of fishing line at angles around the garden will work too,as will discs hanging loose from fishing line.
Bazooka Joe
Snotty, Kepted birds for a long time now, your problem looks like the Sparrowhawk. I've being through this many times, & the only way is prevention. Try & double mesh your avairy, even if it's garden mesh, the net type. You need a gap between the two meshes, 1-1/2" to 2" is enought. The hawks only doing what he's designed to do, survive, your birds are easy pickings. BJ. kip270
Sparrowhawk/Goshawk is the bird in question. What you need to do, (expense maybe but no more dead birds) is build a sub frame either inside or outside with at least a foot space between the skeleton frame and mesh and your aviary. This way the hawk will not be able to get it's foot through and grab anything. Hope this makes sense So you will have an outer shell to your aviary.
