hp01mp Posted September 2, 2012 Report Share Posted September 2, 2012 Hello all, This is my first post here, although I've been picking up lots of useful info from Pigeonwatch for some time now - thank you! Wanted to ask a quick question about my new Beretta Silver Pigeon 1 - my first gun, so please be patient if this sounds overly precious. I bought it last October and so far it's only had no more than 750 cartridges through it. However I've noticed that there seems to be some pitting appearing around the top of the top barrel opening (see attached pdf photo) and I'm getting a bit concerned that there's too much head space between the barrels and the receiver. I've never put anything heavier than 32g of 5 through it, so I would have thought that it should be able to deal with that pressure without any pitting etc. I saw a video somewhere taken in the Purdey factory where they showed that the quick test for a proper fit between barrels and receiver was to put a £10 note in between the two, which will stop it closing. Tried this and mine does close. I imagine Purdey's manafacturing standards are quite a bit higher than Beretta's, but even so, does this sound normal? Also, noticed that the bottom barrel cartridge always rubs against the face of the receiver, which is marking the receiver quite a bit. Am I being a big girl here, or should I be taking the gun back? Richard.Hosgood Posted September 2, 2012 Report Share Posted September 2, 2012 Being a girl IMO - I have the same gun, not tried the tenner test though, but bottom carts will rub on the receiver face as you close the gun, and those marks on the end of the chamber aren't anything to worry about, just clean it as needed and when you wipe the barrel with an oily cloth also wipe that bit. Don't get me wrong I love the gun, but you know how you can talk yourself into these things...! On another note, I understand Hull are scrapping their Three Crowns line, with the exception of 30g paper cases. This is a hammer blow as Three Crowns 32g 5's are by far the softest shooting 32g load I've been able to find (and I've tried a few!). Quite surprised by this as I understand that they do a lot of custom loading with this cartridge for the big names such as Holland & Holland. I think this will mean though that Hull will no longer be doing a 65mm case 32g load at all. Any ideas for a quality, soft shooting 32g 5 cartridge? I really get on with Eley Grand Prix 30g 6's but ideally want to have a 32g 5 for pheasants later in the season and Eley GP don't come in 32g.
