steve_b_wales
You are correct. Electronic callers are illegal if used to call in birds, with the intention to shoot them.

David BASC
Dear All The use of digital callers came up a few years ago and we checked with Defra. Section (5)(1)(d) of the Wildlife and Countryside Act is explicit that any sound recording used as a decoy for the purpose of killing or taking any wild bird is an offence. However, and this is an important bit, the legislation does not specify whether this is digital or otherwise, so it would be a reasonable assumption that if the mater came to Court, a Court may decide digital callers would be included. The fact that digital callers are being used to entice “legitimate” target species is irrelevant. The point is person(s) are allegedly using a prohibited method to take/kill wild birds and it is on this basis that they are opening themselves to legal challenge. kent
I fail to see the relivence of the type of recording and feel that a court would be unlikely to rule on the side of the defendant. As shooters we should consider not only the legal aspects of doing this but also the moral ones. Put it this way if i was a gunshop owner i wouldn't sell them legal loophole or not i feel its a moraly wrong act

As these are pests that we are controlling under the general license I personally dont see the issue aslong they are killed cleanly. That said I dont use digital calls myself.
