Reloading 243 for a browning x bolt

Recommended Posts

It really is a suck it and see job, some 1 in 10 twists like 100gr and some don't. If you want to use just one powder then Vhit 160 is a good start and cheaper than most, you will be limited on the smaller bullets ( fine for 85gr and upwards but to slow for lighter) H414 will let you go a bit lighter but still manage 100grs. I use sierra soft points in both 85 and 100gr, cheap, consistant and accurate. Will post up some loads when I've been to the shed and looked in my load book as been mostly loading 308 for Fallow bucks recently.

for foxing not much beats the 75grain vmax mine is with 37 grains of varget very accurate round and really does the business, it is also not running that fast so can be used on deer without devastating damage, but I tend to use 85grn sierra soft points which also shoot very well in mine with 36 grains of varget. If you go north then you need to go heavier butmost .243's seem to shoot these weights well.

95grn Nosler BTip are my favourite Roe round and my favourite deer / fox bullet. Seirra Pr0-hunter or Gameking 100grn the favourtite for medium deer (fallow does etc) this is the same bullet with a flat or boat tail, pro hunter is flat and the better choice for obtaining the finest accuraccy at deer ranges. 100grn partitions for large deer. I would feed all these on Vhit N160 but H4350 is also popular i never got the best from it

I like 70 grn Nosler B/tip and 75 grn v-max for fox (though 75 v-max have prooved difficult to get over the last 2yrs). I have recently been playing with the lighter blizking from seirra and the 55 Nosler. Varget or H4895 being the powders in the foxing bullets

Dont mess about with COL, just load to book recomendations for bullet in question with a factory rifle

Sorry part of loading your own is to playing with your col as this is the finer adjustments if i can not touch this i might as well just buy factory ammo i think you need to go back to you manual and read it again

Why tell someone not to mess with COL. That's part of making a an accurate cartridge.

because its very over rated in factory rifles. For instance you wont get a light varmint bullet anywere near the rifling in a std .243 unless your barrel has specifically cut for them ( in which case 100grn will seat way too deep) I talk from practical experiance over quite a long time. I have been of the same frame of mind as you but it was quite a time ago and a lot of water has flowed under that particular bridge
