bighit1985
Hi, Just got my FAC through a couple of weeks ago and picked up a Remington 597 semi-auto .22lr it has come with a Simmons 3-9X40 scope, Im looking to shoot rabbits with it mainly, and I believe an illuminated reticle is best at low light/dark, while lamping is that a fair assumption??? Also when looking at other scopes what sort of specifications are essentials??? I haven't got loads to spend on a scope but want to make sure I do get the best value scope I can afford. cheers

Some people prefer it if the scope has very fine cross hairs for target shooting. Why not try the scope it comes with and see how you find it? 3-9 is plenty for shooting rabbits within the range of a .22. i had a 3-9 on my hmr and was shooting rabbits easily at 150 yards. pboro shot
i would say 3x9x40 is ideal ,i had a similar conversation last week and we all agreed a illuminated reticle is a gimmick, the guys who had the all singing scopes 1200+ didnt bother using the illumination once the novelty wore of id try the scope on it see how you get on
bedwards1966
Try what's currently on it first. Unless you have poor eyesight and attempt to push the range to the limits, 9x magnification should be enough. A 50mm objective lens is better than a 40 as it allows more light to be gathered, but I wouldn't replace it just because of that. Also, I wouldn't worry about spending money on a fancy name, cheap scopes can be perfectly adequate.

I just started a topic the other day it has pics on there of it. Some say its too big but providing your shooting at 20 yds plus its fine. Cost just over £200 for the scope Edited October 13, 2012 by lewis2012
Blunderbust
Your 3-9 x 40 will do you just fine. You do not need any more mag for what you have.
tigger
Nikko nighteater £105 or Hawke eclipse £120 both 30mm tube 8x56 is a cracking scope for lamping and day stalking etc, I have a s&b in 8x56 and I think this is a perfect magnification for most shooting my variable power scopes usually stay on 8 so I figured lighten it up with a lighter scope less to play with and go wrong with it as well I'm going 8x56 on all my rifles going forward..... Cost just over £200 for the scope Might be grand for target shooting but out in the field anything over 12-14 mag will require constant parallax adjustment and the higher the mag the more adjustment it will need..Awful amount of adjustment for a bit of bunny shooting
